SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat netters shut out at Cedar Falls Invite

CEDAR FALLS — The Marshalltown High School volleyball team was stonewalled at the Cedar Falls Invite on Saturday, falling 2-0 to all four opponents.

The Bobcats were blanked by Class 5A No. 3 Dowling Catholic (21-14, 21-2), 2A No. 11 Grundy Center (21-12, 21-7), Cedar Rapids Washington (21-17, 21-15) and Linn-Mar (21-19, 21-11). MHS hasn’t won a set since a 3-1 loss Sept. 6 at Mason City.

Marshalltown (1-14) finished the day with a negative hitting efficiency, compiling 32 kills against 39 swinging errors.

The Bobcats were led offensively by Rebekah Downs, who totaled seven kills to go with seven digs. She was one of the top servers as well, going 15-for-16 with one ace. Kennedy Feldman finished with six kills, 10 digs and served 15-for-18 with two aces.

Ella Roush added six kills and one block, and Amaya Moore contributed five kills and a team-leading two blocks. Setter Khloe Shipley totaled 22 assists as well as 12 digs. Jordyn Daggett chipped in three kills and three digs, and Laney Danielson had two kills.

Senior libero Say Paw led the Bobcats’ back row with 29 digs and 25-for-26 serving with an ace. MHS missed just eight serves throughout the day. Chesni Uhde had five digs, served 5-for-5, and had one assist, one kill and one block in limited action. Gaby Estabrook added seven digs, four assists, and served 6-for-8 with an ace.

Bobcat Youth Basketball League extends registration

Marshalltown Parks and Recreation’s Bobcat Youth Basketball League has extended its sign-up deadline to Wednesday, Sept. 28, for any interested boy or girl in grades 1-6.

First- and second-graders will practice on Tuesdays from 5-7 p.m. in one-hour sessions; third- and fourth-graders on Wednesdays; and fifth- and sixth-graders on Thursdays in the same format. Games will be played on Sundays from 12-5 p.m. starting on Oct. 16 and ending Nov. 20. All practices and games will be held at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Marshalltown, and the league is open to kids from any school district. Cost is $35 and includes a T-shirt.
