SPORTS SHORTS: Tyynismaa, Brant go 1-2 at Williamsburg Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG — South Tama juniors Tommy Tyynismaa and James Brant put on a show Tuesday at the Williamsburg Invitational, finishing first and second place respectively by some distance to lead the Trojans to a second-place team finish.

With 75 points, South Tama’s boys’ cross country team finished just eight points behind meet winners Newton.

Tyynismaa ran a 16 minute, 48.2 second race to defeat Brant by nearly 30 seconds. Brant finished the race in 17:16.2, almost a full minute ahead of the third place finisher. Fellow Trojans junior Cade Rosenberger finished in 11th place after a time of 18:57.5.

Freshman Barrett Jesina was another notable finisher in 27th place with a time of 20:09.3. Junior Kaden Kopsa was 34th after a time of 20:32.1.

The South Tama girls had two runners — Kayla Heck in 25th with a time of 24:59.7 and Maeley Elsbury in 31st at 25:49.8.

Comets split triangular with South Hamilton, South Hardin

ELDORA — BCLUW volleyball went 1-1 in a triangular on Tuesday, dropping a 2-0 loss to South Hardin and beating South Hamilton at South Hardin High School to move its overall record to 4-3 on the campaign.

Game one was a heartbreaking loss to the unbeaten South Hardin 28-26, 26-24. Pushing the Tigers to extras in each set, the Comets were led in attack by Sydney Anderson’s 14 assists and Kailan McEwen’s six kills. Grace Farnsworth had five and Anderson chipped in four, as did Virginia Kaisand. Reagan Crawford recorded 12 digs and Anderson had 11, with Callie Swanson chipping in seven.

Game two was close as well, with the Comets getting the best of South Hamilton 25-19, 25-21. Once again the Comets spread the wealth in the attack with Mallori Jones leading the team at six kills and McEwen contributing five. Miranda Jones and Anderson recorded four kills each. Anderson assisted 18 times.

Farnsworth and Anderson had 10 digs apiece and Klayre Gallentine recorded a team-high four aces.

G-R opens season with Montezuma Tournament title

MONTEZUMA — Class 1A preseason No. 4 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball opened its campaign on the road with a comfortable 2-0 win (21-13, 21-7) over Montezuma and went on to finish 3-0 in the Montezuma Tournament on Tuesday.

The 2-0 win over Montezuma was followed by an extremely close 2-1 victory over Williamsburg (21-19, 21-19, 15-13) and a 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) performance against HLV.

Leading G-R in kills through the tournament was Ava Wyatt with 23 kills, closely followed by Megan Cooley with 20 of her own. Emma McClintock had nine and sophomore Jaden Hansen recorded seven.

McClintock had a team-best 51 assists over the three games. Cooley led the team defensively with 12 digs, McClintock had 11 and Wyatt recorded 10. Madisyn Eggers added nine and Breehan Dubberke had eight. Kennedy Brant led G-R with three blocks. Wyatt and Cooley led the team with six aces apiece.
