Hageman wins, ’Cat matmen 2nd in IAC

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown wrestling team sent five grapplers into finals of the inaugural Iowa Alliance Conference Invitational and emerged with one champion and a runner-up team finish on Saturday at Des Moines North.

Bobcat senior Luke Hageman won the 145-pound championship to help MHS claim second behind fourth-ranked Fort Dodge in the first-ever IAC tournament. The Dodgers crowned seven bracket champions and totaled 254 points for the title, finishing ahead of Marshalltown with 199 and Ames with 139.5 in the nine-team event.

Hageman (23-2), ranked eighth at 152 pounds by IAwrestle, went 3-0 with a first-period pin of Jacob Booth-Veale of Ames, an 18-7 major decision over Ryan Strong of Waterloo East, and a second-period pin of Ottumwa’s Koby Chanthalavanh for the title.

Nicholas Wise (120), Xayvion Anderson (138), Dalton Zednichek (160) and Nick Rebik (170) each advanced to their respective championship matches.

Wise (17-8) pinned his semifinal opponent Angel Sanchez of Des Moines Lincoln before sixth-ranked Max Bishop of Fort Dodge outscored Wise 13-3 in the 120 finale. Anderson (14-5) had a pin and a decision before suffering a 9-3 loss by decision to third-ranked Koy Davidson of Fort Dodge.

Zednichek (11-14) pinned Waterloo East’s Gianni Speller in 1:19 in the 160 semifinals before falling to Fort Dodge’s second-ranked Damarion Ross in 39 seconds. Rebik (17-4), ranked 11th at 182, had a 51-second semifinal pin of Ottumwa’s Konner Smith before dropping at 13-1 major decision to 12th-ranked 170-pounder Cal Hartman of Fort Dodge.

Third-place finishes went to Lucas Bantz at 113, 12th-ranked Johan Gomez at 195 and Kunian Kuany at 285. Both Bantz and Gomez went 3-1 on the day, each winning three times by pinfall. Kuany was 3-1 with two pins and a bye.

Earning fourth place for the Bobcats were Anthony Chavez Ordaz at 106, Ivan Pantoja at 126 and Kenton Kiehouse at 132. Finishing fifth were Colton Ricken at 152 and Michael Narvaez Correa at 220, while Ignacio Macias took sixth at 189.

Marshalltown hosts its Class 3A district wrestling tournament on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Roundhouse in hopes of qualifying for the Feb. 16-18 state meet in Des Moines.
