No automatic qualifiers for Bobcat track

NORWALK — The Marshalltown High School boys’ and girls’ track and field squads both finished last out of eight teams in the Class 4A state-qualifying meet Thursday night in Norwalk.

The Bobcat boys tallied 23 points and finished eighth, just one point back of Ottumwa (24). Johnston won with a dominating 185 points, followed by Southeast Polk (136), Norwalk (129) and Ankeny Centennial (104.5).

Marshalltown was led by a pair of fifth-place finishes. Anthoneih Kopsa scored four points for placing fifth in the 400-meter run with his time of 52.00 seconds, and Kunian Kuany took fifth in the shot put with his heave of 44 feet, 7 3/4 inches.

The Bobcats’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Gatleel Joar, Dalen Huston, Fernando Garcia and Salvador Ruiz timed in at 1:06.64 for sixth place, while every other Bobcat relay placed seventh. Joar placed ninth in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.12).

On the girls’ side, Marshalltown made off with just 11 points. Johnston prevailed with 165 points, Southeast Polk was second with 120, Ankeny Centennial took third (117.5) and Norwalk was fourth (100.5).

For the Bobcats, Maeve Janssen scored three points for her sixth-place finish in the discus after her toss of 103-5. Marshalltown’s 4×400 relay closed the meet in sixth place, as Grace Rasmussen, Thalia Gallegos, Leticia Herrera and Micah Blevins combined for a time of 4:31.22.

Blevins earned seventh in the 800, timing in at 2:25.50, and she was 10th in the 1,500 in 5:19.21.

Three Bobcat relays — sprint medley, 4×100 and 4×200 — scored one point apiece for placing eighth.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualifies for next week’s state meet in Des Moines. The 12 at-large qualifiers in each event are expected be announced today.
