SPORTS SHORTS: STC’s Kopsa advances to district boys golf

WILLIAMSBURG — South Tama junior Kaden Kopsa tied for fourth place and advanced to the next round after Wednesday’s Class 3A boys’ golf sectional meet at Stone Creek Golf Club.

Kopsa shared the fourth-lowest score of the day with his round of 78, but was the best finisher from a non-qualifying team.

Knoxville won the meet with a 308 team total, Williamsburg was second at 322 and Grinnell also advanced with its 329. Evan Smith of Knoxville shot the medalist round of 70 and Carson Uitermarkt was third with a 77, while Williamsburg’s Crew Klingner was second (76) and Zach Glandorf tied for fourth (78).

Kopsa and Newton’s Kinnick Pritchard (80) both advanced as individuals to Monday’s 3A district meet at Bos Landen in Pella.

South Tama finished seventh in the team standings with a 389 total, ahead of only Centerville (399). Behind Kopsa, Daniel Wiese shot a 94, Cale Graff carded a 108 and Kyle Heck had a 109.

Top-ranked Rebels sink Sailors to remain unbeaten

REINBECK — The top-ranked Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team remained undefeated with a 5-0 walloping of eighth-rated Waterloo Columbus on Tuesday night.

Aiden Hunemuller had two goals to lead the Rebels (15-0), while Tyler Nolder had one goal and four assists. Austin Betts had a goal and an assist as GC/G-R jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead on the visiting Sailors (7-7).

Dylan Knaack also chipped in a goal for the Rebels. Goalkeeper Max Anderson needed to make just two saves for the clean sheet. GC/G-R put 22 shots on goal in the win.

Trojans topple Benton boys in overtime

TAMA — Allan Martinez scored two goals and Ramiro Saquic tallied once as the South Tama County/East Marshall boys’ soccer team rallied past Benton Community for a 3-2 overtime victory on Tuesday night.

Pedro Nunez notched an assist as the Trojans (4-8) overcame a halftime deficit for the win.

Aurelio Valdez stopped nine shots in net for STC/EM.

Eli Kupka and Quincy Gilbert each scored a goal for the visiting Bobcats (5-9).

STC/EM girls unable to catch Bobcats

VAN HORNE — Benton Community scored three unanswered goals in the second half to pull away from the South Tama County/East Marshall girls’ soccer team for a 5-1 win in Tuesday’s WaMaC Conference West Division collison.

Martha Flores scored the lone goal for STC/EM (1-11, 0-5), coming on an assist from Natalie Meek. Evelyn Fonseca made 21 saves in net for the Trojans, but Benton (4-9, 2-2) still snapped its eight-game losing streak.

Cyclones headed to 2023 ESPN Events Invitational

ORLANDO — The Iowa State men’s basketball team will participate in the 17th annual 2023 ESPN Events Invitational tournament. The Cyclones will be one of six teams that played in the 2023 NCAA Tournament to be part of the eight-team field. The tournament will take place at the State Farm Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports near Orlando on November 23-26.

This marks the second time the Cyclones take the floor in Orlando, having appeared in 2016. Joining the Cyclones in Orlando will be Boise State, Butler, Florida Atlantic, Penn State, Texas A&M, VCU and Virginia Tech.
