Trojans spring into regional final

Greenwood pitches, hits to help No. 14 West Marshall mow down Forest City

The No. 14 Trojans blanked the Indians, 4-0, to advance to Tuesday’s regional finals.

STATE CENTER — When West Marshall freshman Aubree Greenwood wants to know how she’s looking in the batter’s box, head coach Jake Randall shoots her straight.

Anything Greenwood provides in addition to her pitching is simply garnish, and her home run in Saturday’s Class 3A Region 5 final against Forest City was a cherry on top of it all.

Greenwood hit one of her team’s two home runs and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the 14th-ranked Trojans’ 4-0 triumph over the Indians, advancing West Marshall into the regional finals for the first time since 2017. The Trojans (25-8) will travel to face No. 7 Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Sumner with a state tournament berth hanging in the balance.

Greenwood struck out 11 Forest City batters while allowing just two hits and three walks in a complete-game pitching performance that helped propel her team to within one win of Fort Dodge.

“I tell her ‘anything we get out of you at the plate is just bonus on what we get out of you in the circle,” Randall said. “That (homer) was a huge one tonight. That really sparked things up and really got her adrenaline going and it was fun for our kids.”

West Marshall’s battery of Greennwood and sophomore catcher Riley Randall drove in three of the team’s four runs offensively while working through Forest City’s lineup with relative ease. The sturdy Trojan defense committed one inconsequential error and Greenwood walked slap-hitter Colette Loges three times, but the team was up to each challenge along the way. Loges was the only Indians baserunner to advance as far as third base — twice — as Greenwood settled in for her third shutout of the summer.

Four days after throwing a four-inning perfect game against South Tama, Greenwood cruised into the top of the sixth against Forest City (16-7) with a no-hitter still intact. After walking Loges with two outs, Dru Seglem slapped a hard single through the right side for the Indians’ first hit.

Aubrey Miller added a leadoff single in the seventh, but Greenwood got a sliding catch from left fielder Lillian Fischer and back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

“No, I was not expecting to get a no-hitter,” said Greenwood. “I knew (I had a no-hitter going) up until the third inning and I felt like I was getting a little tight. My defense really helped me out there. They’re amazing.

“I just focus on the batter and let my defense do the work.”

A little offense didn’t hurt, either.

West Marshall struck for its first run in the bottom of the second inning, starting with a leadoff walk to Amelia Ranson. Before Greenwood could walk, Ranson was caught trying to steal second, but Rachel Randall reached safely when Forest City fumbled an attempt to get courtesy runner Savanna Davenport at second base.

Riley Randall made the mistake hurt, bouncing an RBI single down the third-base line for a 1-0 Trojan advantage.

Jillian Karsjen led off the third with a solo home run down the left-field line, and Greenwood got hers to start the fourth.

The Trojans tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Ranson singled and scored on Riley Randall’s bases-loaded single to deep left field. A baserunning hiccup prevented West Marshall from additional runs, but it was all more than Forest City was going to get against Greenwood.

“Her rise ball was really efficient and her outside fastball is pretty good most of the time,” said Riley Randall. “We worked in a few of our drop balls, which were helping a lot. They just make our infield work so that’s what we were throwing.

“We have a really good field and a lot of good defensive players so we try to use them.”

Riley finished 2-for-3 with two run-scoring singles to lead the Trojan offense, which managed just six hits against Forest City’s Brooklynn Gerdes. Fischer hit a two-out double in the bottom of the first, Ranson singled, while Karsjen and Greenwood both got their second homers of the season.

“I’ve been in a pretty big slump most of the year, so it’s nice to finally see my hard work pay off,” said Riley Randall. “But a lot of our girls showed up tonight and we had a few bombs so that’s really helpful.

“We’ve worked really hard this year and we have earned a lot of our goals.”

Getting the opportunity to play in a regional final was one of the top targets for coach Randall’s squad, he said. On Tuesday night, the Trojans will get that chance.

“We met in our auditorium the first week of January and one of our goals was to play in a regional final,” he said, “and what we’ve done throughout the entire year is we talked about trying to win a conference championship and then trying to beat East Marshall. We did that because we wanted to put one game on our map and try to get up for that one game and try to win that one game.

“All of those other games are to be prepared for Tuesday night. One game. Every night’s one game, but it’s going up there and just trying to get them to continue to believe in themselves and go out and compete.”

Starting at $4.38/week.
