SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat swimmers splash past Des Moines Roosevelt
DES MOINES — Marshalltown girls swimming won all but two events in a 111-75 dual victory at Des Moines Roosevelt on Tuesday.
Maisie Gummert won all four events she participated in, including solo wins in the 50-yard freestyle (27.70) and 100 butterfly (1:08.60) as well as two relay victories.
Leia Hernandez won the 200 freestyle (2:11.01), Emma Case won the 100 freestyle (1:01.28), Adele Beek placed first in the 500 freestyle (6:22.99) and Rachel Case was the top placewinner in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.47).
Marshalltown won all three relay events – Drea Ceren, Beek, Gummert and Kate Hauser won the 200 medley relay in 2:10.02; Hernandez, Case, Gummert and Ceren won the 200 free relay in 1:48.75, and Emma Case, Libby Meyer, Hernandez and Beek won the 400 free relay in 4:16.99.
In diving action, Kate Hauser scored a 197.25 for the gold.
Next up for the Bobcats is Saturday’s Bobcat Invite at the Marshalltown High School pool.
West Marshall netters put Perry away in straight sets
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall volleyball team improved to 2-0 in the Heart of Iowa Conference with Monday’s 3-0 sweep of Perry.
The Trojans (5-10) scored set wins of 25-18, 25-15, 25-21, to improve to 4-0 against the Jayettes (5-6, 0-2) since rejoining the HOIAC.
West Marshall was led offensively by Lily Zahnd, who totaled 13 kills in the match. Bella Borgos added seven kills, Avery Evertsen had six, while Kylee Schuler and Amelia Ranson chipped in four apiece. Senior setter Natalie Nichols finished with 16 assists and Zahnd added another nine successful sets.
Defensively, Rachel Randall racked up 21 digs to lead the Trojans. Schuler, Borgos and Zahnd had one block apiece, and West Marshall compiled eight aces from the service stripe. Nichols served 13-for-15 with two aces, Evertsen was 11-for-11 with one ace, and Zahnd went 11-for-14 with a team-high four aces.
