Bobcats sparkle on Senior Night
MHS volleyball downs North in three straight
Marshalltown volleyball’s senior depth stepped up on Tuesday night.
The Bobcats delivered a Senior Night sweep of Des Moines North in a cross-division Iowa Alliance matchup in the Roundhouse.
MHS won, 25-12, 25-5, 25-14 to improve its record to 10-15 overall.
“We have a big group of seniors out there, so we really wanted to come out strong today and show what we can do,” said Kennedy Feldman, one of the eight senior players honored before Tuesday’s game.
Feldman had seven kills on Tuesday. Madison Rogers led the Bobcats with eight kills and Ellie Hughes chipped in five kills with 12 assists.
The Bobcats gave up the first three points of the game to the Polar Bears, then went on a 5-0 run with Feldman at the service line and never trailed the rest of the match.
Feldman and Rogers both had long service runs in the first set, and Laney Danielson put down three kills including the set winner.
“We did a really good job of just making sure we were on our toes, always moving our feet,” MHS head coach Jen O’Neal said. “You don’t know what to expect [from North] all the time, and I think they really responded well to that.”
MHS steamrolled the Polar Bears in set two, starting up 8-2 and then riding a McKenna Coleman service run to the tune of a 15-0 set closing run, including four aces from Coleman.
The Bobcats had 11 total aces from the service line on Tuesday.
The girls kept it loose in the huddle in between sets, singing along to songs from Backstreet Boys and Bruno Mars playing over the PA.
“It shows that we can really have fun together, but we can also focus and get serious when we need to,” Feldman said. “Us senior girls have learned throughout our years the type of leaders we want to be, and a lot of us were on varsity last year, so we knew what we wanted to do as seniors this year.”
The Bobcats had a 6-0 run in the third set to wrestle control and finish off the sweep.
After some tough competition at a Cedar Falls tournament on Saturday and a Roland-Story round robin on Monday, the Bobcats are off until next Thursday for their home regular-season finale against Des Moines East.
“We’ve definitely seen some fast-paced teams,” Feldman said. “We played really well against a lot of those teams so I think we’ll take that knowledge into the future.”
The senior depth helps Marshalltown continue to elevate its game, too.
“We’ve got a long way to go yet this season, but this night meant a lot to these girls,” O’Neal said. “It just means that much more when we can take away a win.”
