SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats get one at Roland-Story tourney

STORY CITY — Marshalltown volleyball went 1-3 at a round robin tournament at Roland-Story High School on Monday.

The Bobcats defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 21-19, 21-12 in their only win of the night. In Monday’s other action, Marshalltown fell to the 12th-ranked (3A) hosts by 21-13, 21-19 scores, were swept by 2A No. 4 South Hardin, 21-12, 21-18 and dropped two sets to Gilbert, 21-16, 21-12.

Laney Danielson struck five kills in the win against H-D-CAL and Kennedy Feldman added four kills. Danielson and Feldman contributed eight and six digs, respectively. Gianna Baune chipped in a couple aces on 8-of-8 serving and Feldman put down two aces on 8-of-9 serving.

Across all four matches, Danielson had 12 kills, Feldman 11 and Madison Rogers 10. Gaby Estabrook and Ellie Hughes had 18 and 14 assists, respectively. Danielson and Olivia Holmgren each had six total blocks and Rogers led the Bobcats with 19 digs.

Trojan volleyball stays perfect in HOIAC

STATE CENTER — West Marshall volleyball improved to 5-0 in Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference play after a sweep of South Hamilton at West Marshall High School on Monday.

The Trojans won 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 and are now 9-17 overall and remain tied atop the conference standings with Roland-Story. The Trojans head to Story City to take on the Norse, ranked 12th in 3A, on Thursday.

Lily Zahnd spearheaded the Trojan attack with 12 kills and Avery Evertsen added 11 kills, with Natalie Nichols distributing 12 assists to various West Marshall attackers.

Up front defensively, the Trojans had eight total blocks, including three total for Evertsen and two for Zahnd. Away from the net, Reese Jensen drudged up 10 digs and Zahnd and Lillian Fischer contributed seven digs each.

At the service line, Evertsen was 6-of-7 serving with three aces and Zahnd dropped in two aces on 5-of-7 serving. Nichols was 10-of-10 from the line.

BCLUW’s White leads area at Cubs Invite

COLO — BCLUW senior Cayden White scored a top-10 finish for the Comet cross country team at Monday’s Nevada Invitational at Hickory Grove Park near Colo.

White finished the course in 17:56 for seventh place overall. Gilbert’s Logan Bleich was the individual champion at 17:10.

West Marshall had the best team finish, placing fourth out of 11 teams with a 142 team score. Erick Rosas-Canchola led the Trojans in 17th with a 19:16 timing and Urijah Courter was close behind in 18th at 19:18.

East Marshall’s boys placed eighth with a 219 team score, led by Austin Pansegrau’s 15th-place finish in 19:09. Cael Curphy was 37th in 20:09.

The BCLUW boys finished 10th as a team with a 259 score. Jacob Castell was the next Comet across the line after White, finishing 53rd in 21:26.

All five scoring Gilbert runners placed in the top five individually to score a perfect 15 points for the team title, followed by North Polk with 81 and Nevada scoring 82.

Eldridge paces Trojan girls at Nevada Invite

COLO — West Marshall freshman Dalaney Eldridge finished fifth individually to lead Trojan girls cross country at Monday’s Nevada Invite hosted at Hickory Grove Park in Colo.

Eldridge crossed the finish line in 21:54. North Polk’s Alexis Hergenreter was the champion in 20:13.

West Marshall led area teams on Monday with a sixth-place team finish, scoring 153 points. Addie Thompson scored 10th in 22:12 and placed 11th as an individual.

BCLUW’s girls were eighth as a team with a 169 team score; Abby Kemp scored 13th in 22:22 and Kalia Stover was 20th in 23:02.

East Marshall placed ninth with 205 points, led by Sydney Hull in 27th in 23:21 and Mallory Ostroski in 41st in 24:40.

Gilbert won the girls title with 65 points, followed by North Polk (73) and Roland-Story (100).
