BIG FOUR BASKETBALL: No. 5 ISU settles for fifth in Maui

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Milan Momcilovic scored 18 of his career-high 24 points in the first half and No. 5 Iowa State pulled away from Colorado 99-71 on Wednesday to claim fifth place at the Maui Invitational.

Curtis Jones had 19 points, Keshon Gilbert scored 15 and Dishon Jackson, Joshua Jefferson and Tamin Lipsey added 10 apiece for the Cyclones (5-1). Jones and Jefferson grabbed six rebounds each, and Gilbert had six assists.

Julian Hammond III scored 20 points and Andrej Jakimovski added 18 to lead the Buffaloes (5-2).

No. 22 Iowa 69, Rhode Island 62

CANCUN, Mexico — Addison O’Grady scored 18 points, Hannah Stuelke added 13 and No. 22 Iowa beat Rhode Island 69-62 on Thursday night in the Cancun Challenge.

O’Grady has been in double figures in six games after having just two total over the previous two seasons. She was 8 of 9 from the field to help Iowa shoot 52% from the field.

Iowa was without its leading scorer, Lucy Olsen, due to a deep cut on her knee suffered when she tripped at practice. She’s averaging 17.3 points in six games.

Harsimran Kaur scored 21 points for Rhode Island (4-3).

Iowa plays BYU on Friday, while Rhode Island battles Idaho State.

North Texas 68, UNI 48

ORLANDO, Fla. — Drake transfer Atin Wright scored 18 points as North Texas (6-1) beat Northern Iowa 68-48 on Thursday night at the NIT Season Tip-Off.

The Panthers (3-3) were led in scoring by Ben Schwieger, who finished with 13 points.

Leon Bond III added eight points and eight rebounds for Northern Iowa. Jacob Hutson also put up eight points.

North Texas took the lead with 19:39 left in the first half and did not relinquish it. Wright scored 10 points in the first half to help put his team up 34-21 at the break.
