Hawkeyes handle Kansas in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Kansas, 71-58 on Wednesday night at the Sanford Pentagon, improving to 5-0 for the year.

Hannah Stuelke and Lucy Olsen scored 16 points apiece to lead the Hawkeyes, who jumped out to an 18-4 advantage after the opening quarter.

The Hawkeyes set the tone early with their defense, holding Kansas (4-1) to a mere 8.3 percent shooting from the field.

Taylor Stremlow and Olsen each hit a 3-pointer and finished the first quarter with five points apiece for Iowa, which was making its first appearance in the Sandford Pentagon.

Kansas responded by outscoring Iowa 23-20 in the second quarter, but the Hawkeyes kept a 38-27 lead at the intermission.

Iowa freshman Teagan Mallegni hit a pair of 3-pointers during the period and Stuelke scored eight points to help the Hawkeyes maintain their healthy advantage.

Taylor McCabe’s 3-pointer midway through the quarter was a highlight as Iowa stretched its lead to its peak — 17 — with 3:37 left in the third.

The fourth quarter was evenly matched with Iowa outscoring Kansas 13-12. Stuelke capped off the game with four rebounds in the fourth quarter, securing her fifth career double-double and solidifying Iowa’s victory.

The Hawkeyes are 5-0 to start Jan Jensen’s tenure, making her the second coach in program history to do that. She joins Angie Lee who started 7-0 in 1995-96.

Stuelke finished with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Olsen registered a game-best six assists.

Addison O’Grady chipped in with nine points while freshman guard Taylor Stremlow had a career best seven points.
