Hawkeyes handle Mount Mercy in opener
IOWA CITY — Six players scored in double figures as the University of Iowa women’s basketball team tipped off the season with a 91-73 victory over Northern Illinois on Wednesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Newcomer Lucy Olsen led the Hawkeyes with 19 points and seven rebounds, while returners Kylie Feuerbach (14), Addison O’Grady (12), Hannah Stuelke (11) and Taylor McCabe (11) all pitched in with the scoring.
Feuerbach knocked down four 3-pointers to go with her team-highs of nine rebounds and six steals. She also had five assists.
Northern Illinois was led by Brooke Stonebraker with 15 points, while Alecia Doyle had 14 and Sidney McCrea added 12.
“It’s nice to get that one,” said first-year head coach Jan Jensen. “This program is very special to me and to start with a win was important. I’m proud of how our team really buckled down after a slowish start.”
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday in the Ally Tipoff in Charlotte, N.C., where they will face Virginia Tech in a 4:30 p.m. game that will be televised on ESPN2.
