Redhawk volleyball tops River Valley, returns to state

WEBSTER CITY — The North Tama volleyball team qualified for state for the fifth time in the last eight seasons by beating No. 9 River Valley 3-1 in Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 7 final at Webster City High School.

The fifth-ranked Redhawks (25-15) fought off the Wolverines (30-3) by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, to advance to Tuesday’s state quarterfinals at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

North Tama was led by a whopping 24 kills from Kruiz Ewoldt, as the junior outside hitter took 59 swings and hit at .271 efficiency. Freshman outside hitter Lily Sell scored 12 kills, Briar Blake added eight, Cayleigh Heller had seven and Faith Dvorak six.

Redhawk senior setter Zoey Rausch compiled 29 assists and Heller, a junior, had 19 more.

Defensively, junior libero Addison Hochstetler had 31 digs, while Rausch had 16 and Ewoldt 14. Heller led at the net with two blocks while Blake, Dvorak and Sell had one apiece. Rausch led the team at the service line, going 18-for-18 with two aces, while Haydn Wilson was 18-for-19 with one ace.

North Tama will face No. 4 seed Riverside (38-3) on Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Court 1 at Xtream Arena in the state quarterfinals.
