SPORTS SHORTS: Hawkeyes outlast Texas A&M-Commerce in opener
IOWA CITY — Payton Sandfort scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to go with seven assists to help Iowa beat Texas A&M-Commerce 89-67 on Monday night in a season opener.
Owen Freeman added 15 points and nine rebounds for Iowa. Pryce Sandfort had 13 points, and Josh Dix and Drew Thelwell scored 10 apiece.
Payton Sandfort shot 7 of 14 from the floor and 4 of 9 from long range. The senior averaged 16.4 points and hit 94 3-pointers last season, third-most in program history.
Khaliq Abdul-Mateen scored 12 points and Scooter Williams Jr. added 11 to lead Texas A&M-Commerce.
Drake women rally past North Dakota State
FARGO, N.D. — The Drake women’s basketball team started its season Monday with a true road test, overcoming a 15-point deficit to defeat North Dakota State 84-78.
Anna Miller posted a double-double for the Bulldogs with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and added a record-setting six blocks. Katie Dinnebier added 19 points and led Drake with six assists. Courtney Becker and Abbie Aalsma both notched double-figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Avery Koenen led North Dakota State with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Bulldogs blast York in season-opening home game
DES MOINES — The Drake men’s basketball team got its season underway at the Knapp Center with a 93-41 win over York University on Monday night.
Daniel Abreu scored a career-high 30 points on 10-of-16 shooting, going 6-for-10 from 3-point range to lead the Bulldogs out of the gate.
Bennett Stirtz contributed 18 points and seven assists, and Nate Ferguson chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Ikechukwu Nwaobi led York with nine points.
Panthers pound Spartans in season opener
CEDAR FALLS — Five Panthers scored in double-figures as the Northern Iowa men’s basketball team rolled past the Dubuque Spartans, 96-54, Monday at the McLeod Center.
Northern Iowa shot over 50 percent on the night and outrebounded the Spartans by a 2-to-1 margin, with UNI’s depth outscoring Dubuque’s bench by a 52-17 advantage.
RJ Taylor finished the night with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with a career-best four assists. Tytan Anderson finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Leon Bond III recorded 12 points and a team-high seven boards in the win, while Ben Schwieger notched 12 points.
