SPORTS SHORTS: Hollingsworth leads Storm in girls’ wrestling opener
SHEFFIELD — The South Hardin-BCLUW girls wrestling team started its season with an 0-3 showing at the West Fork Quad on Monday night.
The Storm were led by returning state qualifier Taya Hollingsworth, who earned both of the team’s match wins on the night. Hollingsworth was 3-0 with a forfeit and a pair of pins. She flattened West Fork’s Autumn Wood in 25 seconds in the opening match, and she ended the evening with a 42-second pinfall over Charlie Larsen of Clear Lake.

Campbell scores 18, Panthers pummel Leathernecks
CEDAR FALLS — Trey Campbell’s 18 points helped Northern Iowa defeat Western Illinois 82-56 on Tuesday night.
Campbell shot 7 for 12, including 4 for 7 from beyond the arc for the Panthers (3-2). Tytan Anderson shot 5 of 8 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line to add 17 points. Ben Schwieger had 13 points and shot 5 of 8 from the field, including 1 for 4 from 3-point range, and went 2 for 3 from the line.
Trey Deveaux and Marko Maletic finished with 15 points each for the Leathernecks (2-3).
Iowa’s Sandfort picked for Lute Olson watch list
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior forward Payton Sandfort has been named to the 2024-25 Lute Olson National Player of the Year ‘Early Season’ Watch List, the announcement was made Tuesday by the College Insider, Inc. The award is presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I college basketball.
Sandfort has reached double figure in each of Iowa’s first five games. He flirted with triple-doubles in Hawkeye victories over East Texas A&M and Southern, and he is averaging 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists, while shooting 42.3 percent from the field with 12 3-point field goals.
Sandfort has also been named to the John R. Wooden and Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Preseason Watch Lists.
UNI’s Anderson on Lou Henson Award watch list
BOSTON — Northern Iowa men’s basketball player Tytan Anderson has been named to the Lou Henson Award early season watch list, as announced on Tuesday.
Named in honor of Lou Henson, the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who appeared in 12 NCAA Tournaments and the 1989 NCAA Final Four with the Fighting Illini, the award is presented annually to the top play in mid-major college basketball.
Anderson, a Preseason First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection this year, is tied for the team lead with 13.5 points per game through the first four games of the 2024-25 season, while also leading the Panthers with 6.5 rebounds per game this year.
