Comets tower over Warriors
BCLUW girls start fast to top Meskwaki
CONRAD — Big size and bigger pressure put BCLUW girls basketball on the winning track on Friday night.
Savannah Moeller scored 19 points to lead a trio of BCLUW scorers in double digits in a 76-34 romp over Meskwaki at BCLUW High School.
Grace Farnsworth and Klayre Gallentine added 16 points each for the Comets (2-2), Dorothy Bear scored 10 points for Meskwaki (0-2) and Dayeci Davenport added nine points.
The 6-foot-1 Moeller and 5-foot-10 Farnsworth combined for 14 of the Comets’ 16 points in the first quarter as BCLUW charged out to a 16-3 lead after eight minutes.
“We knew that we had a size advantage, but the issue sometimes is whether we take advantage of that,” Johnson said. “Tonight we did, especially in that first quarter, and we’ve been working the last two weeks on feeding those posts whenever we have that advantage inside. It’s a work in progress, but I appreciate that the girls were pretty stubborn that first half and got the ball inside.”
BCLUW led 34-15 at halftime and started the third quarter with a 15-1 run as Gallentine had the hot hand beyond the 3-point arc as Meskwaki tried to collapse on the BCLUW posts.
“Savannah had a tough shooting game against Collins-Maxwell and tonight she shot it well, and once she got going and they tried to take her away Grace was able to kick off of that,” Johnson said. “By the second half, we were getting wide-open threes and knocking them down, a really good team balance.”
All the while, Meskwaki was smothered by a BCLUW pressure defense that jumped in passing lanes and forced the Warriors into risky situations.
“Being in the press just gets us out of our tendencies to have a slow start offensively,” Johnson said. “Sometimes it’s to our advantage to run it, sometimes not, but we’re going to always try to press.
“I try to teach Grace and Savannah that any lob pass can be theirs. Grace is almost like a free safety in football where she can read it and pick off a lot of passes and I saw Savannah doing that too tonight. They were ready to go.”
Next up for the Comets in Iowa Star action is a home tilt with Baxter next Tuesday.
“Very good team, very well-balanced team,” Johnson said. “We’ll just have to have a good practice on Monday and see where it goes.”
