SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans outscore South Hardin for fourth straight
ELDORA — Ava Mundt and Kali Aldrich both scored career-highs and the Grundy Center girls’ basketball team stopped South Hardin 42-31 in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.
Mundt scored a game-high 21 points and Aldrich added 13 for the Spartans (3-2, 2-0), who led 17-16 at the half. Aldrich outscored South Hardin (2-3, 1-1) in the third quarter, 6-5, as Grundy Center’s 14-5 advantage in the period gave the Spartans some breathing room. Maddy Hendershot added six points and Karlee Lynch got a bucket for Grundy, which never trailed.
Ayda Eller and Grace Eller scored nine points apiece to lead South Hardin.
Wolverines can’t catch Montezuma boys
MONTEZUMA — The GMG boys’ basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t catch Montezuma before the final buzzer, falling 76-70 on Thursday night.
Grady Dieleman led the Wolverines (1-3) with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds to go with six assists. Rider Kupka got 19 points and Colin Teske had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in defeat.
Montezuma’s Brady Boulton made five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 36 points. Max Anderson added 20 points for the Braves (3-1).
STC girls wrestling dominates rival Bobcats
VAN HORNE — The South Tama girls’ wrestling team won 10 of 12 contested matches in a 70-9 blowout of Benton Community here Thursday night.
The Trojans got pins from Jayva Gomez (105 pounds), Ava Hendricks (115), Keylee Holloway (125), Brooklyn Mitchell (130), Ava Perkins (135), Maylee Rucker (140), Paisley Bro (145), Autumn Elsbury (170) and Ioleta Kingbird (190).
Taylor Johannsen (110) won by major decision as well, and STC received two forfeits in the dual meet victory.
Slifer leads Mustang matmen at triangular
PARKERSBURG — Xavier Slifer went 2-0 to lead the East Marshall/GMG boys’ wrestling team, which went 0-2 at a triangular on Thursday.
The Mustangs fell to Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center, 54-18, and Class 1A No. 1 Don Bosco, 60-24.
Slifer won both of his matches at 138 pounds by fall, pinning AP/GC’s Mathew Luiken in 1 minute, 7 seconds, and Don Bosco’s Zander Younblut in 3:45.
Against the host Falcons, EM/GMG also got match wins from Drew Wheater (190), Kolten Good (120) and James Wenner (157). Wheater edged Maison Copp by decision, 11-7, while Wenner beat Elias Cakerice 7-4. Good pinned Brayden Jara in 3:51.
West Marshall matmen sweep a pair
JEFFERSON — Four West Marshall boys’ wrestlers went 2-0 on the mats as the Trojans won a pair of Heart of Iowa Conference duals in a triangular here Thursday night.
Class 2A No. 17 West Marshall defeated Greene County, 55-23, before besting Roland-Story, 54-26.
Twelfth-ranked Kinnick Geers went 2-0 with two first-period pins at 144 pounds to lead the way. No. 3 Jon Gonzalez got a technical fall and a pin at 120, and Ben Gonzalez did the same at 165. Wade Weuve scored a decision and a pin to have a perfect night at 157.
Second-ranked Urijah Courter won his only match at 113 by fall, pinning Greene County’s Jaron Jacobs, and No. 4 Shane Hanford did the same at 144 by pinning Roland-Story’s Isaac Hall.
STC wrestlers roughed up by ranked foes
VAN HORNE — The South Tama boys’ wrestling squad was defeated in both ends of Thursday’s triangular at Benton Community, falling to Class 1A No. 2 Alburnett (68-8) and the 2A No. 2 host Bobcats (69-6).
Marcus Bear (175 pounds) won both of his matches on the night, scoring a 12-3 major decision over Alburnett’s River Williams and a second-period pin of Sage Edberg of Benton.
A major decision at 113 for Ramiro Saquic Xirum, 12-2 over Alburnett’s Landon Howe, was the only other match victory for STC.
Trojan boys succumb to CPU
TAMA — The South Tama boys’ basketball team surrendered 30 points in the second quarter of its 72-35 loss to Center Point-Urbana on Tuesday night.
The Stormin’ Pointers led 45-18 at the half after outscoring STC 30-14 in the second period.
Tanner Large scored a team-leading 13 points to go with six assists for South Tama. Barrett Jesina added nine points, and Marion Harris contributed seven points off the bench.
The Trojans (0-4) were forced into 25 turnovers.
Kinnick Covington led CPU (2-1) with 14 points, Cooper Grimm added 13 points and Carter Andrews got 10.
Ranked Pointers put away South Tama
TAMA — Class 3A No. 13 Center Point-Urbana held the South Tama girls’ basketball team scoreless in the third quarter of its 75-13 triumph in Tuesday’s WaMaC Conference clash.
The Trojans (1-4) were held to eight points or fewer in each period.
Adelyn Stein scored a game-high 15 points off the bench to lead Center Point-Urbana (3-2). Grace Estling added 12 points and Maya Burkhart got 11 more.
Dyan Keahna scored five points to pace STC, but on 2-of-9 shooting. Olivia Hala, Janette Cervantes, Cahysia Kapayou and Daelia Lasley each chipped in two points, but the Trojans couldn’t overcome 36 turnovers.
South Hardin handles Mustang girls
ELDORA — South Hardin fired out of the locker room with big first and third quarters on its way to a 72-24 win over East Marshall in Tuesday’s NICL West Division girls’ basketball opener.
Ayda Eller scored a game-high 16 points to pace South Hardin (2-3, 1-0), and Grace Eller added 14 points. Alli Sheldahl pitched in with 13 points and six steals.
Ashtyn Wheater had eight points and 13 rebounds to lead East Marshall (2-4, 0-1). Alivia Neuroth and Kiela Wolf both pitched in with four points.
