SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans go 3-0 at BCLUW quad
CONRAD — West Marshall boys wrestling defeated South Hardin-BCLUW, East Marshall/GMG and Waterloo Columbus in a quadrangular at BCLUW High School on Thursday night.
The Trojans, ranked 20th in Class 2A in the preseason dual team rankings from the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, defeated Columbus, 77-6, beat EM/GMG, 58-14 and toppled the Storm, 55-27.
Jon Gonzalez and Kinnick Geers had three head-to-head wins for the Trojans; Skylar Hanford, Jack Decker, Garrett Bear and Shane Hanford also went 3-0 with a mix of head-to-head and forfeit victories.
In other area action in Conrad on Thursday, EM/GMG finished 2-1 with a 37-36 win by criteria against Columbus and a 42-33 win over SH-BCLUW. Drew Wheater, Xavier Slifer and Jordan Meling went 3-0 for the Mustangs.
The Storm finished 1-2 with a 53-24 win over Waterloo Columbus. Beau Towne, Zaden Eggers and Sawyer Kane were 3-0 on the day.
A-P/GC wrestling wins two at Union
LA PORTE CITY — Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center boys wrestling won two of three duals at a Union Community quadrangular on Thursday night.
The Falcons beat Vinton-Shellsburg, 54-30, and topped North Tama, 58-24; the only loss on the night came to the hosts by a 51-27 margin.
Kyle Seitz, Hunter McBride and Jesse Brouwer all went 3-0 for A-P/GC.
North Tama dropped duals to Union 62-10 and Vinton-Shellsburg, 60-18. Kolt Knaack went 3-0 at 157 pounds for the Redhawks and Drayke Dvorak and Maxon Monat had two wins each.
West Marshall girls tame Tigers
STATE CENTER — Bella Borgos scored 20 points to lead West Marshall girls basketball to a 52-36 victory over South Hardin on Thursday at West Marshall High School.
Borgos made 8-of-16 field goal attempts, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, and had six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Lily Zahnd contributed 14 points and nine rebounds and Avery Evertsen had seven points with 12 rebounds.
West Marshall led 25-20 at halftime. The Trojans capitalized on cold shooting from the Tigers, including 3-of-23 (13 percent) from 3-point range.
No. 15 Rebel girls get past Waterloo Columbus
REINBECK — The Class 1A No. 15 Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team gradually pulled away for a 48-31 win over Waterloo Columbus in Monday’s season opener for both teams.
Kennedy Brant powered the Rebels with game-highs of 19 points, 14 rebounds and four assists, pulling down nine offensive rebounds in the win. Lily Dripps added 13 points and eight boards, and Elly Sieh got 10 points and six boards.
Macey O’Brien had 11 points, 16 rebounds, six assists, four blocked shots and two steals to lead Columbus.
Trojan girls come up short at Saydel
DES MOINES — South Tama girls’ basketball couldn’t complete the comeback in a 47-42 loss to Saydel on Tuesday night.
The Trojans (0-2) trailed by 10 points entering the fourth quarter and cut the deficit in half before the final horn.
Paige Rummans had 24 points, 23 rebounds and eight blocked shots to lead Saydel (2-0).
Cahysia Kapayou paced South Tama with 14 points and four steals. Dyan Keahna added 10 points, and Rylee Ridout finished with six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
North Tama tandem drives Redhawks past Royals
TRAER — Ava Breakenridge and Kruiz Ewoldt combined to score 43 points as the North Tama girls’ basketball team toppled Colo-NESCO 52-27 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference opener.
Breakenridge tallied 24 points to go with six rebounds and five steals, while Ewoldt added 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals in the win. Gabrielle Seda chipped in with four points, six steals and five boards for the Redhawks (2-0, 1-0).
Redhawk boys outlast Colo-NESCO at home
TRAER — The North Tama boys’ basketball team scored a 55-47 win over Colo-NESCO in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference opener.
Kayler Morris tallied 20 points on 7-of-25 shooting, making just 4-of-17 3-point attempts, but it was good for a game-high in scoring. Josh Dostal had 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Brayton Cibula added eight points and 12 boards for the Redhawks (2-0, 1-0).
Mark Bower led Colo-NESCO (0-1, 0-1) with 18 points and seven assists.
Mustangs no match for D-NH girls
LE GRAND — Dike-New Hartford led by 19 at halftime on its way to a 50-16 triumph over the East Marshall girls’ basketball team on Tuesday night.
The Wolverines (1-1) forced East Marshall into 32 turnovers in the cross-NICL contest.
Izzy Norton scored 12 points and Payton Foster had 11 to lead D-NH.
Alivia Neuroth scored six points off the bench to lead East Marshall (1-2). Ashtyn Wheater added five points and three steals.
Meskwaki girls fall to Baxter
MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The Meskwaki girls’ basketball team suffered defeat in its season opener, falling 51-19 to Baxter in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.
Emie Tuhn had 19 points and Kamdyn Krampe added 18 to lead the Bolts (1-1).
Dayeci Davenport and Dorothy Bear scored seven points apiece to lead Meskwaki. Davneporth had 10 rebounds as well to lead the Warriors.
GMG girls basketball blanks Twin Cedars, 54-0
GARWIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team shut out Twin Cedars for its first win of the season, beating the Sabers 54-0 on Tuesday night.
Makayla Pendleton and Arianna Pierce both had double-doubles to lead GMG (1-2). Pendleton had 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Pierce had 16 points and 10 boards. Rhianna Murty also had 11 rebounds, and Madison Bryant added six points off the bench.
Twin Cedars lost its first game after not fielding a varsity girls basketball squad last winter.
STC boys turned back by Eagles
DES MOINES — The South Tama boys’ basketball squad suffered a season-opening loss at Saydel in Tuesday’s 67-50 setback.
Cyrell Etzel had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead STC. Tanner Large added 12 points and five assists, and Barrett Jesina chipped in nine points and three steals in the loss.
Brady Hicks racked up 24 points to lead Saydel.
