SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans start fast, finish off Sumner-Fredericksburg

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team pounced on Sumner-Fredericksburg and finished off the Cougars for a 43-22 win in Friday’s cross-NICL contest.

The Spartans (7-4) jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the opening quarter, led 23-15 at the half and held Sumner-Fredericksburg (3-7) to just seven points after the intermission.

Karlee Lynch led three scorers in double figures for Grundy Center, netting 14 points. Kali Aldrich added 12 points and Raelyn Steinmeyer made three 3-pointers on her way to 11 points.

Grundy Center clobbers Cougars to remain unbeaten

GRUNDY CENTER — Four players scored in double figures as the Grundy Center boys’ basketball team remained unbeaten with a 79-43 shellacking of Sumner-Fredericksburg on Friday night.

The Spartans (9-0) were led by Brayden Wallis with a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and Tiernan Vokes piled up 17 points. Ryker Thoren scored 14 points and Judd Jirovsky added 11 more in the win.

Grundy Center led 49-18 at the half and eased to the finish line from there.

Tatum Nuss led Sumner-Fredericksburg (6-4) with 18 points.

Nevada stops West Marshall’s win streak

NEVADA — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team had its four-game win streak halted by Nevada, 76-43, in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

John Nelson scored a game-high 24 points to lead Nevada (9-1, 7-1), which was coming off its first loss of the season — a 73-56 setback against Class 2A No. 4 Grand View Christian.

West Marshall trailed 41-21 and couldn’t catch up. AJ Dee led the Trojans (6-4, 5-3) with 13 points, Noah DeSotel added nine and Lucas Barnes finished with seven. Cash Johnston contributed five points and a team-high six rebounds.

Trojan girls finish fifth at Nevada Dual Tournament

NEVADA — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team went 2-1 to place fifth at the Nevada Dual Tournament on Thursday night.

The Trojans fell to host Nevada in the quarterfinals, 45-24, before winning back-to-back matches to claim the consolation championship. West Marshall upended Norwalk, 48-24, and Boone, 47-30, to take fifth place.

Kylee Schuler (140 pounds), Elyse Ranson (155) and Elizabeth Kalinay (190) all went 3-0 to lead the Trojans. All three Trojans went 2-0 on the mat while receiving one forfeit, with Schuler and Ranson scoring two pinfalls each. Kalinay earned one pin and one technical fall.

Alivia Frost (110), Hope Shaffar (130), Lillian Fischer (145) and Reese Buschbom (170) each finished 2-1.

Mustang matmen go 2-0 at NICL triangular

FAIRBANK — The East Marshall/GMG boys wrestling team went 2-0 in a pair of North Iowa Cedar League duals on Thursday night.

Four Mustang matmen went a perfect 2-0 on the night. Hayden Boles (113 pounds), Xavier Slifer (126), Jordan Meling (132) and Drew Wheater (190) each won both of their contested matches. Slifer and Meling both had two pins, Wheater scored two technical falls, and Boles posted one pin and one decision.
