SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall boys pin down conference pair
NEVADA — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team won 19 of 22 contested matches, including 14 by pinfall, on the way to a pair of Heart of Iowa Conference victories on Thursday night.
The Trojans toppled Nevada 71-3 and Saydel 71-12. Against the host Cubs, West Marshall won 13 of 14 weights while receiving just two forfeits. The Trojans’ seven wins by pin came from Urijah Courter (120 pounds), Jack Decker (132), Dutch Hillers (138), Wade Weuve (157), Ben Gonzalez (165), Bryce Crawford (190) and Jacob Dare (215).
West Marshall scored seven more pins against Saydel — Courter, Jon Gonzalez (126), Decker, Hillers, Kinnick Geers (144), Weuve and Crawford.
Shane Hanford (150) won both of his matches by technical fall.
STC wrestling splits WaMaC triangular
CENTER POINT — The South Tama County boys wrestling team split a WaMaC Conference triangular on Thursday night, defeating Center Point-Urbana (41-25) after falling to Williamsburg (64-9).
Eli Cruikshank (132 pounds) earned a pin in the final match with Williamsburg, and Ramiro Saquic Xirum (113) scored a 9-5 decision over Charlie Foster to account for STC’s only other win in the first dual.
Saquic Xirum made it a 2-0 night with his 17-1 technical fall over Jackson McGonegle of CPU. Kinzer Jaennette (165) accounted for STC’s only other match win with a second-period pin of Brayden Hakert. The Trojans received four forfeits to secure the dual.
Mustangs defeated twice in NICL double dual
LE GRAND — The East Marshall/GMG boys wrestling team dropped a pair of NICL duals at home on Thursday night, falling 65-15 to Denver and 45-29 to Dike-New Hartford.
Xavier Slifer and Drew Wheater both went 2-0 to lead the Mustangs. Slifer (126 pounds) won both of his bouts by fall, pinning Denver’s Jericho Grimmett in 3:51 and DNH’s James Wingert in 44 seconds.
Wheater pinned DNH’s Gavin Hines in 30 seconds after scoring a 4-1 decision over Denver’s Corbin Hill.
Hayden Boles (120) and James Wenner (150) both won by pinfall against Dike-New Hartford, while Jordan Meling (132) tallied a technical fall against the Wolverines.
