SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys compete at IATC Indoor
AMES — The Marshalltown boys track and field team brought a small group to Thursday’s Iowa Association of Track Coaches (IATC) Indoor Championships at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames.
The best placing of the day went to the distance medley relay, placing 16th in the 4A race with a 3:52.73 time achieved by Isaac Ceniceros, Aiden Smitherman, Kieron Sharp and Parker Gooding.
Gooding was also 22nd in the 4A 800-meter race in 2:11.96, a new season best. Ethan Gorsuch was 22nd in the long jump with a best jump of 18 feet, 2 ¾ inches.
The 4×400 relay of Sharp, Smitherman, Carson Wright and Ceniceros finished 23rd in 3:44.61.
In Class 3A, South Tama County’s Barrett Jesina placed 11th in the 3,200-meter race in 10:36.14.
BCLUW’s distance medley relay finished fifth in the 1A boys race in 3:46.65, Eathan Petermeier, Colton Donaldson, Owen Myers and Cayden White passed around the baton.
White was also third in the 800 in 2:02.14; BCLUW’s Vance Hoyt finished 7th in the long jump at 19 feet, 1 inch.
Spartan girls nab pair of silvers at IATC Indoor Meet
AMES — Grundy Center girls track and field placed in the top 10 of Class 2A teams competing at Friday’s Iowa Association of Track Coaches Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Lied Recreation Center on the campus of Iowa State University.
The Spartans racked up 23 points to tie with Treynor for ninth out of 40 scoring teams. Mid-Prairie was team champion with 52 points, finishing ahead of Pella Christian (50) and Tipton (46).
Grace Storjohann was the runner-up in the 2A 800-meter run in a time of 2:17.89. Tipton distance dynamo Noelle Steines edged out Storjohann for gold in 2:17.77. Storjohann was also the anchor of the runner-up 4×400 team as Raelyn Steinmeyer, Maddy Hendershot, Karlee Lynch and Storjohann clocked in at 4:14.36. Pella Christian won that race in 4:05.97.
Allison Koch added team points with a fifth-place finish in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 1 inch. The 4×800 relay of Steinmeyer, Hendershot, Lydia Hook and Lynch finished seventh and the sprint medley quartet of Evelyn Geerdes, Koch, Ava Heeren and Storjohann placed eighth.
West Marshall’s Kylee Schuler was the runner-up in the 2A high jump, also clearing 5-1 but winning a tiebreaker over three other girls that cleared that height. Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany was far above the competition at 5-6.
East Marshall did not score any team points in 2A but came close in the shuttle hurdle that finished 10th in 43.85, team of Vaeda Bryan, Marisa Cahalan, Addy Denham, and Makayla Hala.
BCLUW had a couple of point-scoring events in the 1A competition; Kalia Stover finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:11.16, and was the anchor of the seventh-place 4×800 relay that completed the race in 11:03.27 after the baton was passed between Ceanna White, Abby Kemp, Chloe Switzer and Stover.
South Tama County’s Scout Ridout led the Trojans with a ninth-place run in the Class 3A 60-meter hurdle prelims, time of 10.04.
G-R’s Boyd named to 1A all-tournament team
DES MOINES — Gladbrook-Reinbeck senior Michael Boyd was one of five players named to the Class 1A All-Tournament Team following the IHSAA Class 1A Championship boys basketball game at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Boyd scored 35 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in two games for the Rebels, who bowed out in the semifinals with a loss to eventual runner-up Bellevue Marquette.
Also named to the team were Spencer Roeder of Bellevue Marquette, Hunter Horn of Fort Dodge St. Edmond and Madrid’s Brody Buck and Toryn Severson – Severson was named all-tournament team captain.
Severson scored 21 points as Madrid defeated Bellevue Marquette in the Class 1A championship game, 59-57, for the school’s first state basketball title.
