SPORTS SHORTS: Hawkeye women crown 3 champs, win national title
CORALVILLE — The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team finished the 2025 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Tournament with three champions and 15 All-Americans, bringing home their second-straight team title with 201.5 points.
Top-ranked Macey Kilty defeated North Central’s Bella Mir, 7-2, to claim the 145-pound crown. Kilty concluded her 2025 season undefeated going 28-0.
At 160, top-ranked Kennedy Blades (25-0) added to her lengthy resume by beating second-ranked Kaylynn Albrecht of McKendree in the title match by first period technical fall, 10-0.
First-ranked Kylie Welker (27-0) made quick work of second-ranked Sabrina Nauss from Grand Valley State in the 180 finals, winning by technical fall, 10-0, in 58 seconds. Welker became the program’s first back-to-back national champion.
Top-ranked Jaycee Foeller was the last Hawkeye to wrestle for a title. She fell to second-ranked Tristan Kelly of McKendree, 6-0, to finish runner-up at 207.
Other Hawkeyes who earned All-American status include Rianne Murphy (103, 3rd), Sterling Dias (103, 4th), Ava Bayless (110, 4th), Emilie Gonzalez (110, 5th), Brianna Gonzalez (117, 5th), Cali Leng (124, 7th), Emmily Patneaud (131, 6th), Nanea Estrella (138, 3rd), Reese Larramendy (145, 3rd), Naomi Simon (180, 3rd) and Alivia White (207, 4th).
Iowa finishes in 3rd at Big Ten Championships
EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Iowa men’s wrestling team finished in third place at the 2025 Big Ten Championships at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Hawkeyes dropped all three finals bouts.
“We are heading to Philadelphia,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “I think you have to be looking forward. You evaluate, you look forward, you get better. You have to really look forward to the competition, not just because the date is on the calendar, but because you are excited to compete at the National Championships.”
No. 1 seed Drake Ayala finished as runner-up at 125 pounds, losing to second-seeded Lucas Byrd of Illinois via fall in 3 minutes, 16 seconds.
Second-seeded Michael Caliendo dropped a 4-1 decision at 165 to the No. 1 seed Penn State’s Mitchell Mesenbrink.
At 197, No. 1 seed Stephen Buchanan lost a 4-2 decision to No. 3 seed Jacob Cardenas of Michigan.
The Hawkeyes won three placement matches. No. 7 seed Ben Kueter finished in third at heavyweight after defeating No. 3 seed Joshua Heindselman of Michigan, 2-1.
In fifth-place matches, fourth seed Patrick Kennedy pinned No. 12 seed Maryland’s Branson John in 1:59 at 174 and No. 4 Seed Gabe Arnold defeated No. 3 seed Silas Allred of Nebraska, 4-3.
No. 2 seed Kyle Parco dropped the 149 third-place match to No. 1 seed Shayne Van Ness of Penn State, 13-0.
