SPORTS SHORTS: Spartan boys tennis taken out by Sailors
WATERLOO — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ tennis team won its way into the Class 1A Substate 4 semifinals before falling to Waterloo Columbus on Saturday at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center.
The Spartans stormed past Osage, 5-0, before falling to the host Sailors 5-3. Columbus dispatched Iowa Falls-Alden in its opener, 5-0, and then toppled GC/G-R to reach the substate finals. Waterloo Columbus will play at No. 4 Decorah on Wednesday with a 1A state berth on the line.
Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck ended its season at 12-4 after serving up more of a challenge for Waterloo Columbus than in the Sailors’ 9-0 season-opening victory in Grundy Center. The Spartans split in singles play, getting wins from Elias Cakerice at No. 2, Kael Edwards at No. 4, and Dayton Myers at No. 6.
Columbus finished off the 5-3 victory with doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 2.
Grundy Center girls golf advances to regional finals
CLARION — The Grundy Center girls’ golf team cruised to the team title at Friday’s Class 2A Region 3A tournament at Clarmond Country Club, advancing to Wednesday’s regional finals.
The Spartans shot a 371 team score to distance themselves from East Sac County (408) and Eagle Grove (418) in the eight-team tournament.
The Spartans claimed four of the six individual spots as well, led by Leah Larson’s medalist round of 86. Avery Knutsen shot 92 for runner-up honors, Reagan Pekarek was fourth with a 96, and Kahlynn Draper was fifth with a 97.
Grundy Center advances to the Region 3 finals on Wednesday at Pine Lake Country Club in Eldora.
Trojans take a step toward girls state golf
LEON — The West Marshall girls’ golf team earned advancement through the Class 2A Region 4B tournament on Friday by finishing second out of eight teams at Leon Golf & Country Club.
The Trojans shot a 351 to trail only Centerville’s 341 in the final team standings. West Marshall was comfortably ahead of Albia (388) in third.
Trojan golfers comprised five of the top nine spots in the individual standings, led by Natalie Nichols in fourth place with a round of 82. Riley Randall (88), Rachel Randall (90), Sienna Edler (91) and Jillian Karsjen (91) accounted for West Marshall’s final team score.
West Marshall will host the Region 4 finals on Wednesday at 10 a.m at Lincoln Valley Golf Course near State Center.
Redhawks move on with runner-up finish
WINTHROP — The North Tama girls’ golf team had a 53-shot cushion to capture a spot in the Class 1A regional finals after finishing second at Friday’s Region 4B meet at Buffalo Creek Golf Courrse.
The Redhawks shot 394 to finish in second place behind East Buchanan (368), while Central City (424) also advanced due to host East Buchanan finishing in the top two. Iowa Valley (447) was fourth.
North Tama’s Kylie Calderwood earned third place for her round of 88, while Briar Blake and Kensington Pick shared seventh place at 99. Jessica Morrison completed the Redhawks’ team score with a 108.
North Tama will compete in the 1A Region 4 finals on Wednesday at Prairie Knolls Golf Course in New Sharon.
STC girls’ tennis team falls to Wolverines
TAMA — The South Tama girls’ tennis team suffered season-ending defeat in Friday’s Class 1A Region 4 quarterfinals, falling 5-0 to Dike-New Hartford.
The Trojans (2-13) were unable to challenge the Wolverines (16-1) at a couple spots and fell 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 2 and 3 singles.
STC’s Hannah Houghton was ousted at No. 1 singles by Izzy Norton, 6-2, 6-3, while Kylie Husak lost a 6-3, 6-0 match at No. 4 to Lauren Muller. Mady Boriskey fell to Haley Badker at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3.
Spartan girls succumb to Grinnell in girls tennis
GRINNELL — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ tennis team dropped a 5-0 first-round match with Grinnell in Friday’s Class 1A Region 4 quarterfinals.
The Spartans (2-17) got at least three games in every defeat, even winning a set at No. 5. Makenna Steinmeyer put up a fight before falling in heartbreaking fashion, 2-6, 6-2, (11-9) to Grinnell’s Piper Rundall.
Ashlynn Draper took a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 1 to Kennedy Harms; Kamren Thomas-Henley was defeated 6-4, 6-3 by Forrest Behrens at No. 2; and Kaydence Kuiper challenged Judith Perez-Valentin at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4. Madison Mayo fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 to Ella Seney, and Riley Whitehill was within 7-5, 6-3 of Ava Seney at No. 6.
