West Marshall’s top-ranked girls cross country team wins Heart of Iowa Conference championship
MONROE — The Class 2A No. 1 West Marshall girls’ cross country team continued its winning ways, claiming its first Heart of Iowa Conference title on Monday at Gateway Recreation led by individual champion Addie Thompson.
The top-ranked Trojans won for the eighth time in 10 meets this season, scoring 37 points to hold off a trio of ranked 2A competitors in fourth-ranked PCM (45), No. 18 Grand View Christian (82) and No. 19 Roland-Story (109).
Nevada (114), Greene County (160) and South Hamilton (178) rounded out the scoring teams.
Thompson, a senior, scored first place thanks to a nearly 20-second cushion over runner-up Abi Teeter of PCM. Thompson claimed gold with a time of 20 minutes, 34.62 seconds. Thompson finished fifth, third and now first in consecutive Heart of Iowa Conference meets.
West Marshall freshman Kielly Kasal jumped into the top 10 by finishing fourth in 21:05.85, while sophomore Dalaney Eldridge — the defending HOIAC meet champion — wasn’t far back in sixth place (21:21.17).
Freshmen Ella Randall (12th, 22:05.59) and Zoey Wignall (19th, 23:16.15) rounded out the scoring for the Trojans.
The West Marshall boys came away with seventh place out of nine scoring teams, finishing with 164 points. Host PCM edged Nevada for the team title, 58-59, while Saydel scored third (97).
The Trojans were led by Erick Rosas-Canchola, who placed 26th in a time of 19:27.25. Aaron Greene was 31st in 19:44.20, while Yuk Heng Wong was 34th in 20:05.49.
Jacob Eirikson (40th, 20:23.35) and Joseph Swigart (50th, 20:42.34) rounded out West Marshall’s scoring contributions.
Roland-Story’s Corben Lucchesi won the individual title with a time of 17:09.60.
