BIG FOUR HOOPS: UNI men slip past South Dakota St.

CEDAR FALLS — Tristan Smith scored 16 points as Northern Iowa beat South Dakota State 65-58 on Sunday.

Smith shot 5 of 6 from the field and 6 for 8 from the line for the Panthers (2-0). Will Hornseth scored 12 points, going 6 of 9 and 0 of 3 from the free-throw line. Leon Bond III shot 4 of 6 from the field, including 2 for 4 from 3-point range, and went 1 for 3 from the line to finish with 11 points.

Damon Wilkinson led the way for the Jackrabbits (2-1) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. South Dakota State also got 16 points from Joe Sayler. Kalen Garry had 12 points, six rebounds and two steals.

WOMEN

Creighton 83, Drake 74

DES MOINES — Kiani Lockett scored a game-high 25 points to power Creighton past Drake 83-74 on Sunday at the Knapp Center.

The Lady Jays (1-1) made four more 3-pointers than the host Bulldogs (1-1) to account for the final difference on the scoreboard.

Neleigh Gessert made five 3-pointers and added 17 points off the bench for Creighton. Grace Boffeli, a transfer from Northern Iowa, added 11 points and 11 boards

Abbie Aalsma made five treys and led Drake with 23 points. Grace Knutson added 20 points and Quinn Vice got 11 points off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Saint Louis 62, UNI 58

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Saint Louis outscored the UNI women’s basketball team 17-9 in the fourth quarter on its way to a 62-58 victory over the Panthers on Sunday at Chaifetz Arena.

UNI (0-2) shot just 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from the field in the fourth quarter and went 2-of-6 at the free-throw linein surrendering the come-from-behind victory to Saint Louis (1-2).

Alexia Nelson led the Billikens with 17 points, while Zya Nugent added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Taryn Wharton led UNI with 15 points before fouling out, and Virginia Edmondson had 13 points and eight boards off the bench for the Panthers.
