Iowa, ISU ready to square off
IOWA CITY — Third-ranked Iowa takes on rival Iowa State on Friday night in men’s basketball action inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Tip is set for 8 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live by the Big Ten Network.
The Hawkeyes (4-0 overall) defeated No. 16 North Carolina at home on Tuesday night, 93-80. Head coach Fran McCaffery’s squad hit 17 three-point baskets in the win, using a quick start to build a double-digit lead and a late charge after the Tar Heels had briefly gained the upper-hand.
Behind for the first time at 68-67, Iowa went on a 14-0 run in 2:33 to obstensibly put the game away with a little less than seven minutes remaining.
Senior Jordan Bohannon scored 24 points, with CJ Fredrick adding 21 and Joe Wieskamp 19. Fredrick hit five three-point baskets, and Wieskamp contributed nine rebounds and five assists.
Luka Garza had 16 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Cyclones (1-1) haven’t played since a 71-68 loss at Hilton Coliseum on Dec. 2. Four ISU players are averaging double figures through the first two contests: Jalen Coleman-Lands (14.5), Solomon Young (13.0), Rasir Bolton (13.0) and Javan Johnson (10.5).
Iowa is 17-1 in its last 18 home games. The Hawks are 68-5 in non-conference contests at CHA dating back to 2012.
Iowa holds a 46-27 all-time lead in the series. The Hawks have won three of the last four decisions, including an 84-68 victory in Ames last year.
The home team has won 14 of 17 dating back to 2004. Iowa is 29-7 all-time against ISU in Iowa City.
