No injuries in school bus fire

No injuries were reported as South Tama school students and the school bus driver were able to escape a fire in the bus they were riding shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The bus was stopped on South 1st Street at South State (Highway 63) in Tama. Superintendent Mary Jones issued a statement by telephone to the South Tama community just after 4:30 p.m. assuring all students and driver had “safely evacuated the bus” and the students were safely at home. The cause of the blaze as not immediately reported, however the bus driver’s seating area was ablaze when Tama firefighters arrived on the scene.

Tama Police assisted by the Toledo Police Department diverted traffic on the highway around the scene while the blaze was extinguished and one-way traffic was opened up at about 4:20 p.m.
