KFJB / KIX101.1 ownership change proposed

A 94-year old Marshalltown business which has witnessed and reported on some of the town’s most historic and compelling events will be changing owners later this year.

And one is already in Marshalltown.

News Talk 1230 KFJB and Iowa’s Best Country, KIX101.1 will be sold by

Marshalltown Broadcasting, Inc. to Trending Media, Inc., said Todd Steinkamp, General Manager of Marshalltown Broadcasting Inc.

“An agreement has been signed, pending Federal Communications Commission approval,” said Steinkamp. “We expect approval in 60 to 90 days.”

Trending Media is owned by Robert and Colleen Holtan of Decorah and Steinkamp of Marshalltown.

The Holtans, owners-operators of KDEC 1240 and KDEC-FM 100.5 in Decorah, lived in Marshalltown from 1987 to 1989, coming to the city when the local stations were purchased from the Norris family in late 1986.

Steinkamp, a Carroll native, has been in broadcasting 21 years.

He has been at KFJB / KIX 101.1 15 years, moving from on-air /Program Director position to GM in 2016.

“Since 2003 I’ve been blessed to be part of a privately-owned company that understands how to do radio the way radio should be done,” said Steinkamp. “The reason I jumped at this opportunity is because I believe in our remarkable employees and their passion for what they do. We also have amazing clients throughout Iowa and beyond, clients that have in many cases become friends. To be able to help our clients/friends grow their businesses has been a pleasure and I look forward to continuing those relationships.”

And a relationship with the Holtans was central to Steinkamp becoming a partner and retaining his GM position with KFJB/KIX 101.1.

“What this boiled down to is Bob Holtan being a previous owner of KFJB/KIX 101.1, and knowing what are stations are all about … what they are capable of. He understands KFJB’s history. They see a lot of value with KFJB/KIX 101.1.

Bob Holtan, president of Trending Media, said he too is bullish on Marshalltown, Central Iowa and broadcasting.

“We came to appreciate Marshalltown and Central Iowa when we, and our three children, moved to town in 1987,” he said. “Two of our fondest memories were when we switched the FM to a country music format in the summer of 1987. It was an idea whose time had come. We also remember those great nights when we did the old Rock n’ Roll shows at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Even though we’ve been a partner in Marshalltown Broadcasting these past 30 years, Colleen and I look forward to a closer connection to the area”.

Said Colleen Holtan: “No changes in staff or management are planned. We’re so proud of what the staff has accomplished over the years and we know they’ll continue to be leaders in Iowa radio”.
