Man arrested for presenting forged checks

Landis

A New Providence man is in Marshall County Jail after he was arrested earlier this week by the Marshalltown Police Department on charges of forgery, lottery forgery or theft of ticket, and ongoing criminal conduct. David Jon Landis, 37, allegedly stole a checkbook and wrote several checks on that account signing the account holder’s name each time when presenting the check, said Capt. Brian Batterson of the MPD. Landis allegedly presented eight forged checks for cash at convenience stores in Marshalltown, Tama and Toledo, according to MPD and Marshall County District Court records. “The lottery forgery or theft of ticket charge was applied because Landis purchased lottery tickets at a Marshalltown convenience store with a forged check,” said Batterson. “A surveillance camera was used to identify Landis.” He also was charged with three counts of forgery, a Class D felony, and three counts of theft in the fifth degree. Ongoing criminal conduct-influence enterprise is a Class Be felony. His preliminary hearing is 1 p.m., March 29, where he will be represented by a public defender. Bond is $25,000 cash or surety.
