Redhawks’ McDermott inducted into Coaches Hall of Fame

Tom McDermott

CEDAR FALLS — Current North Tama defensive coordinator and former Redhawks head coach Tom McDermott was honored at halftime of the Class 3A State Championship game on Thursday, as he was named one of two new additions to the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

McDermott was the head coach for North Tama for 15 years, from 1973-1987, posting an 87-48 record. In recent years, however, McDermott has served as defensive coordinator for the Redhawks, most notably coaching the North Tama defense to 38 shutouts from 2007-2011.

In that span, the Redhawks won the Class A state title in 2010 and finished as runners-up in 2008. During that state championship season, North Tama had the top-ranked defense at 7.93 points per game, and in 2009 they allowed only 3.54 points per game to lead the state.
