WAVERLY -- The East Marshall boys basketball team continued its undefeated start to the season on Saturday with a 56-39 win over cross-NICL opponent Dike-New Hartford in the Winter Classic at Wartburg College.
Zane Johnson had 21 points to lead the Mustangs (9-0), while Zaine Leedom had 15 and Tyler DeBondt had seven.
The Wolverines (7-3) were led by Colton Harberts with 10 points.
West Marshall outlasts Union, 45-34
WAVERLY -- Peyton Pope scored a game-high 17 points and Joe Halverson had a double-double to help the West Marshall boys' basketball team beat Union Community 45-34 at the Winter Classic on Saturday at Wartburg College.
Halverson racked up 10 points and 15 rebounds as the Trojans (7-4) bounced back from Friday's emotional loss to NICL West Division rival East Marshall.
Alex Dickey added seven points and two steals, Josh Larsen had six points, and Cameron Bannister added eight rebounds for West Marshall.
Koby Alpers led Union (1-7) with 13 points.
Cadets outlast Gladbrook-Reinbeck
WAVERLY -- The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys baksetball team fell to Crestwood in the Winter Classic on Saturday, 46-41.
Caden Kickbush had 14 points to lead the Rebels (7-2), while Jackson Kiburis scored 11.
The Cadets (5-5) were led by Clayton Ollendieck with 12 points and Kristian Szajna with nine points.
Jesup takes care of Grundy Center
WAVERLY -- The Grundy Center boys basketball team lost to Jesup in the Winter Classic on Saturday, 55-33.
Cale Hendricks had 10 points and Tanner Appel eight to lead the Spartans (1-10).
The J-Hawks (6-4) were led by Alex Moore with 17 points while Dylan McCombs had 11 to round out the double-digit scorers.
Colo-NESCO girls fall to ranked Nevada
NEVADA -- The Colo-NESCO girls basketball team lost only its second game of the season on Saturday night, as the Royals fell to Class 3A No. 6 Nevada on the road, 58-33.
Faith Vincent had 15 points to lead Colo-NESCO (8-2) and she chipped in five rebounds, three steals and two assists. No other Royal player scored in the double digits, but Chelsea Henze led in both rebounds and assists with seven and four respectively.
A pair of Cubs (10-1) led the way in scoring, as both Lexy Koudelka and Kacey Rewards scored 21 on the night.
The Royals did win their first game out of the winter break, taking down Waterloo Christian 61-25. Vincent had 21 points to lead Colo-NESCO, while Rylee Purvis had 11 and Molly Barten had 10.
Royals fall to Cubs in return from break
NEVADA -- The Colo-NESCO boys baketball team lost to Nevada in its first game back after the winter break, losing 52-41 on the road Saturday.
Matthew Hill led the Royals (6-3) in scoring with 21 points, while Philip Bower had 9 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
The Cubs (5-6) were led by Trent Stahl with 14 points, followed by Luke Merfeld with 13.
Storm wrestling finishes 4th at home
CONRAD -- The South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling team finished 2-2 at its home duals tournament on Saturday, good enough to place fourth out of the eight teams in attendance. The Storm defeated Rockford (46-28) and South Hamilton (51-25) while losing toHudson (42-36) in pool play, then it lost to Iowa Falls-Alden (51-16) in the semifinals.
Taylor Kolthoff was the only Storm wrestler to win all four of his matches, taking down Jack Ites from IFA in a third-round pin, Donovan Arraudt for the Pirates and Jamie Hildreth for the Hawks in a first-minute pin, and receiving a forfeit against Rockford.
Ryne Fuller, Owen Fuller, Kevin Rewoldt, Shadner Anderson, Coby Willett and Lucas Halverson all won three of their matches for the Storm as well.
Tiger women defeated by John Wood
QUINCY, Ill. -- The Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team struggled in its first game out of the winter break on Saturday, falling to John Wood Community College on the road, 56-38.
The Tigers (5-11) trailed 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and 29-16 as they went into halftime. It didn't get any better in the third, either, as the Blazers (5-10) outscored MCC 14-8 right out of the break.
Alyssa Roth led the Tigers with 17 points and six rebounds, while Loralei Siliga and Maria Cruz-Uceda each had seven points. John Wood was led by Chelsea Wood with 13 points.
MCC heads to Ellsworth CC on Wednesday for its next game, as the Tigers take on the Panthers at 5:30 p.m. in Iowa Falls.
