MCC’s Mieses is first-team all-region again
Marshalltown Community College shortstop Jose Mieses completed the unassisted double play on Tuesday when the sophomore Dominican was named to the NJCAA Division I All-Region XI first team for the second year in a row.
Mieses was the Tigers’ lone representative on the 12-player first team after MCC finished third in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference with a 6-18 division record and a 9-34 overall mark. Regional champion Iowa Western had eight first-team selections, Indian Hills had three and Southwestern had none.
Mieses batted .350 in his sophomore campaign, leading MCC with 48 hits, 38 runs scored and a conference-best 23 stolen bases. He shared the team lead with 11 extra-base hits while totaling just nine errors in 164 total chances for a .945 fielding percentage.
Mieses has committed to continue his baseball career next year at Central Methodist University, an NAIA program in Fayette, Mo.
The Tigers had a pair of second-team all-region selections in sophomore center fielder Marving Serrano and freshman third baseman Elijah Bergeron. Serrano batted .309 with six doubles, two home runs and a team-high 23 RBIs, while Bergeron led MCC with a .361 batting average and 11 doubles.
Marshalltown also had three freshmen earn honorable mention, as starting pitcher Walter Hernandez, second baseman Jeffry Roldan and designated hitter Luke Woodward were selected.
