SPORTS SHORTS: Wolverines win Iowa Star opener over Bolts, 55-40

GARWIN — The GMG girls basketball team beat Iowa Star Conference South Division foe Baxter on Tuesday night, 55-40.

The Wolverines (2-0, 1-0) trailed the Bolts (0-3, 0-1) by four at halftime but won the second half 41-22 to earn the win.

Kelsey Vaverka had a team-high 21 points for GMG, including 19 in the second half, and Mable Dieleman had 14 points, 10 of which were in the second half. Vaverka also hit three 3-pointers and Dieleman hit two, with all five going down during the second half. Tory Novotny and Jordan Yilek each had six points for the Wolverines.

Sydney Schmidt led Baxter with eight points, while Caitlyn Bruntz had seven and McKenzie Eslinger and Holly Jessen each had six.

GMG next hosts Waterloo Christian on Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Comet girls suffer home loss to sharpshooting Jesup

CONRAD — The BCLUW girls basketball team lost a home game to Jesup on Tuesday, 59-34.

Madison Ubben had 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks to lead the Comets (1-2) in all three categories, while Bailey Ashton was second in scoring with 11 points.

Emily Treptow had a game-high 21 points for the J-Hawks (2-0), while Brittany Lingenfelter had 18 and Amanda Treptow had 10. As a team, Jesup shot 8-for-13 from the 3-point line and 21-for-49 in total.

The Comets next travel to Eldora to South Hardin on Friday for their first NICL West Division game, starting at 6:15 p.m.

Meskwaki girls take down North Tama in league play

TRAER — The Meskwaki girls basketball team got its first Iowa Star Conference South Division win of the season with a 60-51 victory over North Tama on Tuesday.

Deandra Navarro had 20 points to lead the Warriors (2-0, 1-0), while Leticia Garcia had 11 and Geanna Bear was third on the team with nine points.

Meskwaki next hosts Collins-Maxwell for its second Iowa Star South game on Friday, starting at 6:30 p.m.

South Tama boys succumb to Mount Vernon at home

TAMA — The South Tama County boys basketball team fell at home to Mount Vernon on Tuesday, 66-27.

Bishop Chavez led the Trojans (0-2) with nine points, while Lincoln Kingbird had five and Eli Keahna had four. Keahna led STC in rebounds with seven, and Tyrin Lasley had a team-high four assists.

The Trojans next travel to take on Dyersville Beckman on Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m.

BCLUW boys fall to visiting J-Hawks in season opener

CONRAD — The BCLUW boys basketball team started its season with a home loss to Jesup on Tuesday, 67-38.

Mason Yantis led the way with nine points for the Comets (0-1), while Jack Garber and Jonny Neff each had seven in the loss.

Eric Knott had a team-high nine rebounds, followed by Yantis with seven, and Garber had three assists and two blocks to lead the team in both categories.

The Comets return to action on Thursday with a home game against Janesville.

Grinnell girls top South Tama in ranked showdown

GRINNELL — The Class 4A No. 4 Grinnell girls’ basketball team got out to a 17-point halftime lead and finished off 3A No. 4 South Tama 66-46 in Monday’s non-conference game.

The host Tigers (2-0) outscored the visiting Trojans (0-2) in each quarter except the fourth.

South Tama sisters Jessica and Carissa Musgrave combined to score 28 of the Trojans’ 46 points. Jessica led STC with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Carissa got three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Jaelin Berger chipped in seven rebounds and a team-leading four blocked shots for South Tama, while Taylor Ray contributed seven points in the loss.

North Tama’s 1-2 combination knocks out Regents

TRAER — Karly Jans scored a game-high 18 points coming off the bench to lead the North Tama girls’ basketball team to a 57-36 victory over Waterloo Christian School in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.

Molly Kvidera scored 15 points to provide the Redhawks (1-1) with a 1-2 punch that accounted for 33 points — nearly enough to match Waterloo Christian (0-2).

Six of Carlie Gorder’s game-high 10 rebounds were on the offensive glass for North Tama, and Jans pulled down six of her nine rebounds on the offensive end.

Sidra Wheeler, Amber Smith and Allison White each scored eight points to pace the Regents.

Redhawks’ balance too much for Waterloo Christian

TRAER — Four North Tama players scored in double figures to help the Redhawk boys’ basketball team turn back Waterloo Christian, 77-55, in Monday’s season opener between Iowa Star Conference foes.

Jack Dostal scored 16 points to go with eight rebounds off the bench to lead North Tama (1-0). Noah Bond finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals, Caleb DeBoef scored 12 points off the bench, and Cael Even added 11 points for the Redhawks. Ryan McLean added seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Hale Hulme had eight points, 11 assists and six rebounds.

John Zwack scored a game-high 33 points for Waterloo Christian.

Trojans tripped up by Grinnell in boys’ season debut

GRINNELL — Keith Keahna scored a game-high 19 points but it wasn’t enough to get the South Tama boys’ basketball team past Grinnell as the Tigers won 59-32 on Monday night.

Grinnell (1-0) got out to a 20-5 lead after the opening quarter en route to the wire-to-wire win. AJ Wilkins led the Tigers with 18 points and five steals, while Jake Hull had 13 points and four steals.

Keahna also led South Tama (0-1) with seven rebounds. Matt Wiese and Bishop Chavez chipped in five and four points, respectively, off the bench for the Trojans.
