SPORTS SHORTS: ISU’s Parker is Big 12 Wrestler of Week

IRVING, Texas — Iowa State University redshirt sophomore Ian Parker was named the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week by a unanimous decision, the conference announced Monday.

This is the second time Parker has been selected for the weekly honor and it comes on the heels of two wins over top-12 opponents.

On Friday night Parker, who is ranked 15th nationally at 141 pounds, beat No. 10 Dom Demas from Oklahoma by a 4-3 decision. Demas led 3-1 in the third period but Parker got a takedown with 53 seconds remaining to tie it, then Demas was called for stalling with seven seconds remaining in the sudden victory period.

Against Oklahoma State’s Kaid Brock, who is ranked No. 12 nationally, Parker took a 6-3 decision on the road on Sunday. Parker and Brock were tied at 3-3 after the second period, but Parker started on bottom and got an escape early, then iced the victory with a takedown.

Parker is 9-2 on the year and a perfect 8-0 in dual action. He has not lost a match since the Lindenwood Open in November.

Scott and Joens sweep Big 12 honors

IRVING, Texas — Iowa State University sophomore center Kristin Scott and freshman guard Ashley Joens were named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference announced on Monday.

Scott entered the Cyclone record book on Saturday, becoming the new single-game leader in field-goal percentage, connecting on all 11 of her shots from the floor in ISU’s win at Oklahoma State. Seven of Scott’s 11 shots were from behind the 3-point line as well, as she netted a career-high 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her fourth career double-double. Scott is also the first power-five player in 19 years to score 31 or more points and remain perfect from the floor.

Scott is currently the Big 12 leader in field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage in conference play, making 68.7 percent of her shots and 60.7 percent from three.

Joens had 17 points and seven rebounds in the win over the Cowgirls. She knocked down three triples for the Cyclones and is now second in the league in 3-point percentage in conference games, shooting at a 47.8 percent clip behind the arc in Big 12 games.

Hawkeye baseball adds two coaches

IOWA CITY — Robin Lund and Tom Gorzelanny have joined the University of Iowa baseball program as assistant coaches, head coach Rick Heller announced Wednesday. Lund will serve as the Hawkeyes’ hitting coach, while Gorzelanny will be volunteer pitching coach.

Lund joins the program after serving as volunteer hitting coach for the Northern Iowa softball program during the 2018 season. He was an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at UNI from 2002-2018, and his main teaching responsibilities were in the areas of biomechanics, anatomy, statistics and research methods.

“Robin and I have worked together off and on since 2002 when I was at UNI,” Heller said. “He is an excellent all-round baseball guy who happens to have a Ph. D. in exercise science. Robin will not only be able to fill the void left by Desi (Druschel) and Joe (Migliaccio) leaving, but take it even further with what we are doing on the technology, analytics, research and scouting side in both pitching and hitting.”

Gorzelanny was selected in the 38th round of the 2000 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox, but he elected to attend the University of Kansas. He spent two years with the Jayhawks before transferring to Triton Community College.

After one season with the Trojans, Gorzelanny was drafted in the second round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He made his major league debut in 2005 and played in the 2006 All-Star Futures game.

“Tom has a high-level work ethic with focus to improve every day and he always was a great role model for our players when he was around in the offseason. He will bring a tremendous amount of pitching knowledge and experience to share with our team and Tom’s personality is a great fit for our culture,” Heller said. “This will be the first step in what I believe will be a long and prosperous coaching career for Tom.”
