AGWSR seniors Jessica McDowell and Macy Ubben were selected to the Class 1A all-tournament team with McDowell on the first team and Ubben on the second team.

Former Hubbard-Radcliffe standout Lisa Brinkmeyer scored 11 points, pulled down seven rebounds and contributed three assists in the 80-67 upset victory over Southern Illinois in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Dancing from the 1920s to the 70s will be featured in the Lenihan Synchronized Swim program “The Dance Craze” which featured swimmers: Susan Poffenberger, Lisa Meyer and Carmen Rauba.

Marshalltown High School senior Tara Hays was named to the All-Class 4A Region 5 team by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association as she led the Bobcats with a 12.1 per game average.

MHS Dance Force members Brandi Homan, senior, Angie Bryant, junior and Emily Stephens, sophomore, participated in the All Iowa Honor Drill Team extravaganza performed between the two final game at the high school girls state basketball tournament.

MHS gymnast Denise Leavy brought home the silver medal in the balance beam at the Iowa Girls State Gymnastic Meet.

Iowa Central Community College took fifth place at the NJCAA national swimming and diving championships in its first year of existence and former MHS standouts Aaron Loupee and Darren Bacon helped in the success placing fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Bobcat wrestlers Todd Hirsch, Damon Henry, Zach Ray and Jade Robinson presented Coach Phil Henning with a plaque from the team honoring his 200th career dual meet victory.

Bill Rector and Sue Shipley, Lenihan Junior High students, took first place in the Morning Optimists Oratorical Contest and advanced to the zone contest.

BCLUW grad Chris Crawford, a sophomore at Central College, is a member of the 12-man traveling squad for Central men’s golf team and opened with the Dutch Desert Shootout as he averaged a score of 78.6 in the fall season and finished in first place in the William Penn JV Tournament with a personal best 71.

Hoglan first graders Brian Lewis and Tyler Fulton practiced for a musical performance at Hoglan Elementary School. The musical was performed at the MHS/Community Auditorium.

Miller Junior High drama “Show Biz Iz” featured Nate Winter as old Irishman Barney O’Toole who tries to scare off the new owners of an old theater played by Brent Holtsclaw and Melinda McRill.

Franklin fifth graders Erin Greve, Molly Gervich and Holly Bartlett sign to a song called “Martin Luther King” during a practice session for the musical “Our Favorites.”

• 40 years ago in 1979

Marshalltown Community College students performing in “Side By Side By Sondheim” included cast members Matt Karl, Sandy Smith, Rollie Grady and Linda Dodd performing songs from “West Side Story” and “Gypsy.”

Jake Shipley, of West Marshall, and Jory McDowell, of AGWSR, were named to the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game to play on the Northeast All-Star Squad.

• 25 years ago in 1994

South Tama student Dan Zimmerman earned All-American honors while representing Central College in the NCAA Division III men’s indoor track and field championships when he helped the 4×400 meter relay team get second place in the nation.

The LDF basketball and football cheerleaders for the 1978-79 season were: Tonya Weese, Brenda Schuler, Sherie Schnathorst, Cathy Mehlert, Kim Madison, Penny Anderson and Marsha Ahrens.

The BCLUW High School Mathletes won their home competition on March 7 in Conrad and advanced to the state meet held on April 25 in Iowa City.

South Tama’s Mike Dvorak scored 19 points and Todd Rosenberger added 17 points to carry the Trojans past No. 8 Forest City 76-65 at the Class 3A state basketball tournament and advanced to play Johnston.

• 40 years ago in 1979

Three MHS students represented the school’s DECA Chapter at the National DECA Career Development Conference: Jana Manz and Donna Bilyeu qualified for the national by placing third in the Iowa DECA State Leadership Conference and John Haney represents Iowa as the Iowa DECA state treasurer and would cast Iowa’s vote for the next National DECA president.
