The Marshalltown High School girls’ tennis team defeated the Newton Cardinals 10-1 as Krissy Lankelma and Kalli Hannam won 8-3 in the No. 1 spot; Danielle Eberline and Michelle Kriegel scored a 8-5 victory in the No. 2 spot and Wendy Tan and Katie Allison teamed for an 8-4 win in the No. 3 spot.

MHS produced these winners at the 48th Annual State Leadership Conference: Tonia Wanschel, Michelle Johnson, Monica Atcher, Karin Guthrie and Jennifer Hart.

LeaAnn Randall, of Gilman, a senior at LDF, was awarded the Fourth District Scholarship and Gregory Plum, of Gilman, a senior at SEMCO, was awarded the Mattie C. Clark Scholarship by the Today and Tomorrow Club of Gilman.

West Marshall won its girls’ golf tournament beating AGWSR 398-406 as Kaitlyn Randall took medalist honors with a round of 50 and 41 for a meet-best 91.

The MHS girls’ golf squad topped West Des Moines Valley 180-190 to climb to a 4-0 in the conference as Amy Westberg led the ‘Cats with a 42 for runner-up medalist honors.

MHS boys’ golf squad captured second place at the Knoxville Invitational wit ha score of 303, four shots behind the Newton as Brad Zeitner shot a 72 for runner-up medalist honors.

BCLUW was the runner-up team at the Ballard Classic as Tanner Dielschneider set a meet record in the 400 meter dash with a winning time of 51.23 seconds.

Colo-Nesco and BCLUW shook off a couple of West Marshall meet records to finish one and two at the boys Nevada Invitational as C-N won four events including the high jump and long jump and BCLUW won the shot put with Kent Follett and Jeremy Mugge won the 400 meter hurdles.

State Center softball standout Kathy Lively helped the Iowa State University softball team down Tarkeo of Missouri 5-2 as she hit a double when the bases were loaded in the third inning to bring home three runs.

West Marshall boys’ golf defeated CMB 186-203 as Tyler Keigan and Andrew Hilleman both shot a meet-best 45.

• 25 years ago in 1994

Amy Feller, of Marshalltown, was one of eight University of Iowa students to receive a $1,000 Presidential Scholarship to study abroad for a minimum of one semester and opted to spend second semester of her sophomore year at Potsdam Universitat in Potsdam, Germany.

The MHS girls’ track squad won the Lincoln Invitational with 134 points as Donna Skinner took first in the softball throw; Beth Klinkefus first in the discus; shuttle hurdle relay squad of Karen Clark, Jill Nieman, Patty Fisher and Peri Woltjer, first and the mile relay team of Fisher, Woltjer, Michele McFadden and Marcia Mann also took first.

The MHS girls 4×100 relay of Allese Brooks, Maira Schaumburg, Sam Horn and Jaleesa Vopava posted a season best 51.32 seconds at the Drake Relays improving 20 spots from their seeding.

MHS Charlie Kelly’s two qualifications led the ‘Cats to a six-event contingent into the Drake Relays with: Kelly in the 1,600 meter and 3,200 meter; Troy Eygabroad in the 100 meter dash and 4×100 and the girls’ track in the sprint medley and the 4×400 meter relay.

Among the music students who earned a Division 1 rating at the Tuesday Musical club-sponsored competition were Jason Erion, Diana Helmer and Missy McMaster.

MHS girls soccer defeated Fort Dodge 2-1 as Alyssa Fuller scored the first goal and Kaitlyn Huck scored the second with assistance from Lissa Duff.

MHS girls’ golf squad won the Southeast Polk Invitational with 194 points as Amy Westberg led the squad with a 46.

• 40 years ago in 1979

Janet Soorholtz, of Melbourne, was one of 12 high school student selected as finalists for the $4,000 1979 Veishea leadership scholarships.

Marshalltown Community College baseball notched another win as they defeated Iowa Western Community College 6-1 with Jesse Bailey on the mound allowing one unearned run over seven innings.

The Bobcat girls’ track team survived 40 mph winds to take their own invite with four victories, two coming from Tara Sondall in the 400- and 200-meter dashes capturing the 200 in her fastest time of the season at 25.98 seconds.

The Marshalltown Boxing Club sent four boxers to the Iowa Junior Olympics Tournament: Jeff Buffington, 10, 1978 Iowa Silver Gloves Champion; Jeff Pepe, 13, 1978 Iowa Silver Gloves Champ; Raymond Meling, 13, second in the 1978 Iowa Silver Gloves Tournament and Preston Enlow, 15, 1977 Iowa Junior Olympics Champion and 1977 Regional Junior Olympics Champion.
