Alicia Borton, 17 and a student at West Marshall, took best of show honors with an oil painting of a pair of mallards at the 2009 Iowa Junior Duck Stamp Competition being selected the best out of 365 entries.

YMCA swim team awarded swimmers who broke team records during the season: Sarah Allen (10 and under) 50 yard breaststroke; Dan Christenson, 50 backstroke; Elizabeth Tyler, 50 butterfly; Kelly Hopp, 50 backstroke and Whitney Sondall (11-12 years) 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke.

Pat Watts, of Colo-NESCO, scored in the 75th minute of the game to defeat Clear Lake 3-2 as Watts was assisted by Sean Wells on the winning goal and also on the second goal.

Matt Gieselman, a senior at MHS, was awarded the Olivet Scholar Award from Olivet Nazarene University, the university’s most prestigious award.

Alana Laverty, of Laurel, was notified that she was a recipient of a music campership from the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs and would attend music camp at Morningside College.

Career best nine hole rounds for Lauren Mason and Staci Hillygus led the MHS golf squad to a 175-189 victory over Fort Dodge as Mason took medalist honors with a 41 and Hillygus was runner up medalist with a 43.

MHS girls sprint medley relay team of Angie Sommerlot, Nicole Paxson, Jill Anderson and Tara Sondall captured the win in a time of 151.23 to edge out Eddyville.

Tama County Beef Queen Dawn Schroeder, Tama County Beef Princess Holly Santman, Marshall County Beef Queen Bambi Paul and Iowa State Beef Queen Mary Beenken were on hand at Country Kitchen to kick off May Beef Month.

The MHS girls track team recorded three school records in the 81-78-29 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Iowa City West as Karen Clark broke the long jump record with a 17 feet, 1 inch jump; Donna Skinners set a new shot put record with a 37 feet, 11.5 inches toss and Denise Leavy set a new 400 meter hurdles record in a time of 66.79.
