BCLUW Comet softball pitcher Jamie Fisher fanned 18 batters in the 4-2 win over Denver and then she struck out 13 batters in the Iowa Falls-Alden 7-0 shutout game.

West Marshall track star Richard Affeldt teamed with Bob Kilker, Brian Karsjen and Brian Smith to take the gold in the 1600 meter medley at the state meet in record time 3:32.4.

Cindy Freese, of West Marshall, locked horns with Jennifer Peck, of NESCO, in a pitcher’s dual to climax the BCL Memorial Weekend Softball Tournament as Freese lead her teammates to a 2-0 victory allowing only one hit and scoring a two-run homer.

MHS girls golf squad of Kristin Giannetto, Kate Johnson, Julie Schutt, Katie McKibben, Amy Westberg and Kristi Kelly were poised to take on the Girls State Golf Tournament.

Three area athletes brought back a total of four first place gold medals from the Iowa State High School boys track meet: Wellsburg’s Scott Harms took the gold in the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash plus adding a silver in the 100 meter dash; Brad Schulze, of Gladbrook, took first in the 800 meter run, setting a new state meet record and Mike La Frenz, of SEMCO, captured the gold in the high jump.

MHS student Laura Helmer was honored by IES Utilities at the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair for her project “Garbage as Energy” which was displayed at the company’s headquarters office.

The GMG baseball team blanked BCLUW 10-0 in five innings to win the consolation game at the BCLUW Memorial Baseball Tournament as Jeff Fouch threw a no-hitter, Kevin Groth belted a three-run homer and Justin Hornberg hit a solo home run.
