Marshalltown High School girls’ golfer Emily Gray shot an Elmwood personal best 79 to help keep the ‘Cats in the hunt at the Iowa Girls State Golf Tournament as they finished the first day with a 340 to stay in a close second place to the leader Ames.

Jessie Horton of Julie Lang’s fourth grade class at Anson Elementary handed MHS grads Michelle Johnson and Kelsey Crow their “Dear Me” letters written to themselves eight years earlier as fourth graders. They were part of the first group to receive their letters.

The SEMCO girls softball team ripped Collins in four innings 19-9 as Val Bollheufer hit a home run in the second inning and Dawn Luther added three base hits including a triple.

The BCLUW baseball team with Austin Krause on the mound defeated West Marshall 6-2 as Wade Morris led the offense with a lead-off home run along with a double and three runs scored.

Senior Jeri Hartwig pitched a three-hit shutout in leading GMG to a 3-0 victory over North Tama as she finished with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Claire Handorf, of Gladbrook, finished third in the finals of the Iowa Farm Bureau public speaking contest using the topic “Farming — Facts and Fiction.”

Jarred Carlson and T. J. Flanagan provided the pop at the plate as No. 2 ranked MHS defeated No. 3 ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy 5-4 as Flanagan finished with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs while Carlson added a double, a homer and three RBIs.

Jana Bryant celebrated completion of her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting earning her a lifetime membership in Girl Scouting.

The Garwin baseball team took two games in weekend action as they defeated Maxwell 504 and LDF 10-5 as Joel Johnson smashed a three-run homer in the Maxwell game and Jerry Rohach hit a solo home run in the LDF game and was the winning pitcher striking out three and walking one.

Class 2A No. 2 BCLUW used a perfect game from Jamie Fisher and big hitting from Alli Sharp to overpower Grundy Center 12-0 as Fisher struck out 11 batters and got the final out in a ground out to second. Sharp went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and added five stolen bases.

BCLUW harassed Cedar Falls with 15 hits then scored in the top of the eighth inning to secure a 7-6 victory in the Hudson Invitational as Cherilyn Kruse had three hits while Errica Reese tripled and Jenny Miller doubled.

West Marshall girls moved to 7-0 for the season as they defeated Nevada 6-4 with Cathy White, Bev Seger and Cindy Freese leading the offense.

MHS tennis star Krissy Lankelma became the first MHS girls’ tennis state champion in school history when she won the Class 2A singles tournament completing a perfect 24-0 season with the 6-3, 6-0 wins over third seeded Cassandra Chalhoub, of Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Students Randy Roe, Shari Bryant, John McGuiness, Zach Anthony and Jamie Nixon went “Fishing for Facts” at the math fair put on by Fisher fifth graders.

The MHS girls softbal team romped over South Tama 11-1 as Shari Wolfs and Ronda Anderson led the offense with three hits apiece.

First Unite Methodist Church graduates Kinsey Hill, Dustin Etter, Ashley Thompson, Meagan McCamis, Eric Cherveny and Mike McNamara were honored by the church with a special breakfast and prayer time.

The No. 5 ranked Mustangs shut out GMG 7-0 as Angie Strain hit a key single that helped break the deadlock and get the scoring started.

The Bobcats shutout SEMCO 12-0 as Chris Goodman, Dan Clayton and Brad Van Metre all had two hits each for the ‘Cats and Lynn Cripps scored three times.

BCLUW junior pitcher Jamie Fisher recorded her 1,000 career strike out as the Comets earned the Ballard Invitational title defeating Ankeny 3-1 with 11 strikeouts and Boone in the championship match-up 4-1 with 17 strikeouts.

Finalists for the 1994 Rose Festival Queen were: Kerry Babb, Christina Richmond, Lauri Schrad and Erin Eckhart.

The Iowa State University women’s softball squad enjoyed its finest season ever due in part to the play of five former area high school players: Kathy Lively lead the team in hitting; Carol Eich finished the year at 8-0 on the mound; Julie Eich posted a 1-0 record in her freshman year with a 2.33 ERA; Lisa Hyland was the designated hitter with a .275 average and Lori Adams tied for the team lead in doubles with a .242 batting average.
