GMG baseball scored a 5-inning 12-2 victory over Janesville as pitcher Jake Wall gave up only two earned runs while striking out seven and walking one as teammates Mike Burt went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Phil Flemming scored two runs.

GMG used a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to blank Hubbard-Radcliffe 5-0 as Nicole Holden led the Wolverines at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double and two singles and Kristin Ruff collected a triple and single toward the win.

Diane Miller, president of Marshalltown Community College’s Student Activities Council, said that the $1,100 raised during the dancethon would go to purchase four pieces of park and playground equipment especially designed for use of the handicapped.

The MHS baseball team took a pair over Ames 7-1 and 10-8 as T.J. Swalla lead the team at the plate with 4-for-5 for the night while Ben Buchan went 3-for-6 and Troy Pothast added four hits.

Marshalltown golfers participated in the State Pee Wee Tournament with Brandon Zeitner taking first in the 5-year-old division; Mark DuBois, fourth in the 8-year-old; Tom Gazaway carded a 66 in the 9-year-old division; Greg Brennecke, 51 in the 10-year-old, nine hole rounds; Gary Garuver, a 96 for 18 holes in the 11-year-old division and Stuart Reveness a 102 and Grant Harvey a 107 in the 12-year-olds.

Lenihan held its second annual Word Wizard contest where students choose the definition of a word or its synonym or antonym with Nicholas Lanes taking top honors and Ellen Podhajsky winning second place.

Benjamin Colson, a 1993 MHS graduate, was honored with one of two CRC Freshman Chemistry Achievement Awards from Coe College.

Sara Sudenga winged her way to Australia as a AFS foreign exchange student to spend the summer with a family with three daughters in Melbourne and would attend high school probably in the 11th grade.

BCLUW finished off a perfect day at the Come Invitational with a 2-1 comeback win over MHS as Jamie Fisher through all 19 innings going 10-0 over Grinnell, 5-0 against PCM and then MHS as she recorded one run on seven hits with 30 strikeouts and one walk.

The East Marshall baseball team blasted Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock 19-3 as John Ames lead the Mustangs on the mound for four innings with six strikeouts and two walks and then at the plate going 4-for-4 with a home run, three singles and four RBIs.

Four girls were awarded American Business Women Association scholarships: Jean Osgood, Lisa Cochran, Laurie Chambers and Tammy Awes.

The West Marshall baseball team won its fifth straight game as Brian Smith fired a six-hitter finishing with 12 strikeouts and one walk in the 7-5 victory over Grundy Center.

James Haan, of Toledo, worked on building a dulcimer, a musical instrument either fish-shaped or hourglass-shaped, in a building class at MCC for the Youth Experience in the Arts program.
