The Marshalltown High School swim team opened with four returning veterans: seniors Meredith Johnson who holds 12 state medals; Emily Visser and Samantha Beals both medalists in the state swim meet and junior diver Amy Stiehl, also a state meet veteran.

East Marshall volleyball cruised past Gladbrook-Reinbeck 15-9, 11-15, 15-6 and 15-7 as Angie Strain led the Mustangs going 25-of-28 spiking with 10 kills and four digs and Ginny Landt going 20-of-20 serving with four aces and six digs while Chelle Arney was 17-for-19 on spikes with nine kills.

Stan Groth pitched a no-hitter to power the Green Mountain baseball team to an 11-1 victory over New Providence as he fanned 14 batters and walked five.

The MHS volleyball team opened its season beating Des Moines East 25-20, 25-14 and 25-15 as middle hitters Lauren Lockhart and Nicole Peschong led the No. 13 ranked Bobcats with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

The Bobcat boys golf squad defeated Mason City 155-160 as senior Josh Rezac and sophomore Sean Allen tied for medalist runner-up each shooting a 38.

Paula Waltemeyer, 12-year-old daughter of Marilyn Waltemeyer, of Albion, raised a 19.5 pound muskmelon, roughly the size of a watermelon, from a package of seeds called “Jumbo Muskmelon.”

The MHS football team defense was the driving force as the Bobcats prepared for its home opener against Des Moines North as demonstrated by Aaron Gonzalez and Chris Allen’s performance in the opener against Sioux City each with two tackles and Gonzalez adding a quarterback sack.

The West Marshall Trojans opened Friday Night Football action with a 48-15 trouncing of Nevada as Brian Smith led the offense scoring five touchdowns.

• 40 years ago in 1979

The BCL girls came through with a 7-3 win over West Marshall to capture the BCL-Green Mountain Fall Softball Tournament as Kelly Skartvedt smacked a two-run double to help spark the Comets.

East Marshall boys’ cross country runners had five runners finish in the top 30 at the Dallas Center-Grimes Invitational for a fourth place finish as Brandon Pals led the Mustangs finishing in the 12th position.

• 25 years ago in 1994

The BCLUW Comets shut-out Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock 20-0 as Elijah Cuvelier carried the ball 17 times for 87 yards.

• 40 years ago in 1979

The MHS girls cross Country team placed second in a field of 21 schools at the Waverly Invitational with Karen Clark finishing third and Patty Fisher, sixth, out of a field of 49 runners.

MHS senior Jarred Carlson took the opening kickoff back 92 yards for a touchdown, finished with 93 yards on three passes and four touchdowns in the 53-6 rout of Des Moines North.

The South Tama Trojans blasted Cedar Rapids LaSalle 56-6 as Matt Hand rushed for 127 yards with three touchdowns on 10 carries and Brandon Rutledge rambled for 124 yards on six carries for two touchdowns.

Winners in the Junior Club Championship at the Elmwood Country Club Tennis Championships were: boys 18 singles, Chad Krantman; boys 14 singles, Mike Revness and girls 14 singles, Julie Steffenson.

Zane Johnson, of Le Grand, competed in the track and field at the State Games of America in Colorado Springs, Colo. and finished with a gold medal in the long jump and silver medals in the 100 meter dash and discus.

MHS swim team sunk Mason City 116-69 as Susan Miriovsky won two individual events, 500 freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke, as well as helping the 200 medley relay of Molly Fruin, Heather Rouse and Katie Bloom to a win and the 400 freestyle relay of Staci Nelson, Angie Veld and Bloom to victory.

Dave Soorholtz, of Melbourne, was named the secretary for the Iowa Junior Angus Association.

Six local scouts: Joe Hopper, Rachel Noe, Devin Lawler, all of Marshalltown; Shelby Feld, of State Center; Tyler McLain, of Melbourne and Nick Krough, of Dysart, completed the eight-day horseback riding cavalcade at the Philmont Scout Ranch National High Adventure Base in Cimarron, N.M.

• 25 years ago in 1994

Scott Boston earned Boy Scout’s highest honor when he completed the requirements for Eagle Scout as he finished his project of benches and landscaping wet of the MHS cafeteria.

• 40 years ago in 1979

Green Mountain rolled up three runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure a 13-9 victory over LDF as Laurie Dawson went 1-for-3 for a pair of RBIs, Lori Cook and Margaret Squire rapped doubles and Lisa Klinefelter scored four runs.
