Shannon Ingleby had a heart for the people in China following a 2002 visit and when the opportunity arose to teach English at Tianjin Foreign Studies University in Tianjin, Ingleby said, “Yes.”

Marshalltown High School junior cross country runner Charlie Kelly sprinted to the finish line as he captured his third individual Bobcat Invitational crown.

MHS defeated Des Moines Lincoln in its season home opener 27-19 as Dave Evans led the offense with 91 yards rushing on 14 carries including a 25 yard run for a touchdown.

MHS girls’ swim team soundly defeated Southeast Polk 99-86 as Meredith Johnson took first place in the 200 yard freestyle, the 100 breaststroke and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team of Alix Stewart, Mackenzie Beals and Micala McCarville.

The West Marshall Trojans defeated Bondurant-Farrar 15-13, 15-11, 12-15 and 15-13 as their standout senior Sharon Blood went down hard tearing tendons in her ankle, but not before nailing 22-of-25 in serves and hits with five aces and 13 kills.

Three members of the MHS girls cross country squad finished in the top 10 positions to capture first place with 51 points at the Little Cyclone Invitational as Val Sharp finished in fifth place, Karen Clark in eighth place and Patty Fisher in ninth.

Ranked No. 7 in the nation, Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team routed Scott Community College 11-0 as Otis Williams scored five of the 11 goals and Hector Piffer and Aloisio Varros added two apiece.

BCLUW pickup up a 26-14 win over East Marshall as Elijah Cuvelier ran 40 yards for a touchdown, Marc Grant had a 33 yard touchdown run and William Spiker ran in from the five yard line for the score.

The Green Mountain Mounties captured a pair of wins from New Providence at 11-0 and Steamboat Rock at 17-4 as Sandy Groth had triples in both games driving in three runs in the Steamboat Rock game.

The MHS volleyball team finished second at the Des Moines North Volleyball Tournament as they defeated North, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and West Des Moines Dowling only to be defeated in the championship round rematch by Council Bluffs.

Miller eighth grade cheerleaders consisted of: Lisa Moore, Dee Strudthoff, Michelle Gross, Barb clark, Suzanne Jacobson, Lonnie Arthur, Terri Pitt and Karen Borthwick.

Every time, over the last 18 years of meeting, when MHS squared off against West Des Moines Valley it always ended in defeat until 2009 when Alec Lovin hit a 30 yard field goal as time expired to give the Bobcats a 16-14 sweet victory.

East Marshall volleyball girls swept Grundy Center 15-11, 15-8 and 15-7 as Shawna Burns went 17-of-17 serving with three aces, 12-of-13 spikes with nine kills and 10 digs and Stephanie Beane went 16-of-16 from the serving line with three aces and five digs.

The West Marshall Trojan softball team pulled off a 1-0 upset over No. 3-ranked Ballard of Huxley as Lisa Buck and catcher Shelly Monroe teamed up with two hits in the sixth inning for the only score of the game.

Local leather carving artist, Kyle Landas, had a carved picture featuring Hank Williams chosen for exhibition at the Hank Williams 86th Birthday Celebration and as the cover of the 2010 exhibition calendar.

The No. 5-ranked Eldora-New Providence volleyball squad took their show on the road and downed BCLUW 15-0, 15-0 and 15-6.

Junior Candystriper Jo Clarke received a flower as Senior Candystriper Linda Bestland helped with her cap at the capping ceremony for her volunteer work at the MACH Hospital.

MHS cheer squad of: Sam Reisinger, Laura Weber, Dalena Tran, Nichole Triplett, Yessenia Chavez, Morgan Ellis, Leslie Newman, Libby Larson, Hannah Dolezal, Amber Bouton, Anna Klaas, Jessica Sotyn, Lexi Daugherty, Holly Slowiak, Kaitlyn Hill, Elizabeth Medina, Emma Sternhagen, Katie Huntrods and Rebeca Carson were named Camp Champions in the Cheer Division at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp.

The MHS volleyball squad topped Fort Dodge 15-1, 15-7 and 15-7 as Kirsten Redalen, Jill Mogard, Julie Schutt and Amy Trowbridge were perfect in landing their serves for the night.

MHS swimmers torpedoed East Waterloo 129-33 at the Williamsburg Invitational as diver Bonnie Purvis scored 204.50 points, the second highest in school history and junior Deb Wuest won the 200 freestyle by more than a length over her nearest competitor.
