Elijah Cuvelier and Jessica Schipper were crowned king and queen of BCLUW Homecoming festivities as Tate and Jacob Button carried the crowns.

The Marshalltown High School cross country boys and girls squads made a clean sweep of the Les Duke Invitational as the boys scored the lowest number ever recorded for a team with 12 points and the girls won with 28 points, 41 points below the runner-up team as Stu Atha finished in first place for the boys and Marcia Mann finished in fourth.

The Marshalltown Community College Tigers soccer team jumped on board less than two minutes into the match and frustrated the Iowa Western Community College Reivers to a 4-1 loss to remain undefeated as Rodrigo Albuquerque, Ignacio Echeveste, Otis Williams and Raphael Fernandes each scored a goal.

Former Marshalltown Hoglan Elementary student Jimmy Siemers, 12, who moved to Texas with the Fisher Controls expansions, won an overall gold medal at the National Waterski Championships in West Palm Beach, Fla.

West Marshall went to 4-0 for the season as they shut out Prairie Valley 28-0 with Brian Karsjens leading the ground attack with 123 yards on 10 carries for three touchdowns.

Bobcat award winners from the Marshalltown-Newton game were: Theron Schutte, outstanding offensive player; Allan Illum, co-defensive player with Joel Chandler and Shane Walgamuth, the sweatknocker award for a block he made on a punt returner.

In the battle of the unbeatens between MHS and Mason City, MHS came out on top to ruin Mason City’s Homecoming 38-21 as Austin Ruddick fought his way to 123 yards on 23 carries for three touchdowns.

The East Marshall volleyball team swept through pool play at the South Tama Tournament as they downed Grinnell 20-18 and 15-13 and cedar Rapids LaSalle 15-10 and 15-3 before losing to Hudson in the semifinals as Kiffany Dunham went 37-for-45 spiking with 18 kills and eight blocks and Ginny Landt went 36-for-40 spiking with 12 kills, three blocks, 14 digs and 21-of-29 serve receptions.

The BCL Comets put away Aplington in the first round of sectionals 12-0 in three innings as Sara Sharp led the Comets fanning four of the 10 batters she faced and allowing only one walk.

No. 4 ranked MHS girls volleyball squad rolled over No. 11 ranked Ankeny 15-8, 15-9 and 15-4 to take sole possession of first place in the Central Iowa Metro League National Conference as Jill Mogard was perfect at the line with 21-for-21 serves and Sarah Eads hit all 14 of her serves to lead the ‘Cats.

Greg DeFrance, Jason Harrison and Jason Katzer got hands on experience making apple pies at the Albion School as they celebrated the birthday of Johnny Chapman, better known as “Johnny Appleseed.”
