Marshalltown High School band extravaganza featured an alto saxophone solo by Ryan McFarlin as part of the Jazz II band performance.

The East Marshall Mustangs volleyball team swept GMG 15-2, 15-8 and 15-6 as Shawna Burns led East Marshall with 20-of-23 spiking, 11 kills, one block and 9-of-10 serving with two aces and Kiffany Dunham was a force at the net with 16-of-17 spikes and nine kills.

The BCL Comets celebrated homecoming with a 40-0 domination of Gladbrook as Kevin Hill and Kevin Moler led the offense with 202 yards and 122 yards, respectively.

The East Marshall boys cross country team made another notch in their belt as they came in first at the Union Invitational with five runners finishing just 33 seconds apart: Brandon Pals, Lance Steward, Carsen Kuesal, Trent Harem and Michael Shippy in that order.

The MHS boys cross country squad led by Charlie Kelly coming in first place won the Central Iowa Metro League championship title with Nate Cooney finishing fifth, Dustin Weaver, 12th and Ryan Vestal, 13th.

MHS student Doug Grier placed third out of 56 speakers in the Novice Division of the debate tournament at Roosevelt High School.

BCLUW High School state champion Katie Vaux earned all-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s golf honor for the fourth time in her career at Simpson.

South Tama Trojans moved their football record to 6-1 with the 44-8 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg as Brandon Rutledge led the offense with 102 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.

The MHS girls swim team placed third out of eight schools at the Urbandale Invitational as Susan Fagg set a new school record in the 500 yard freestyle while Kathy Ryden got first place in the 100 yard freestyle.

After falling in game one, the East Marshall volleyball team won three in a row 25-18, 25-23 and 25-23 to defeat GMG at home as Haylee Taylor had a game-high eight kills, three serving aces and 17n digs and Jessie Lee paced East Marshall with 20 digs.

MHS athlete Zach Ray received his prize for winning the “First Great Annual United Way Cookie Munch Off” — a giant cookie from Cookies, Etc.

Boosting the Bobcat Band at the Pig Roast were 190 people that LaDonna Partin, Karen Thompson and Michelle Osgood sold ticket to. For their efforts Partin won a $25 U.S. Savings Bond, Thompson won a huge Teddy Bear and Osgood won a $50 bond.

MHS golf squad finished eighth in the Class 4A fall boys golf championship with senior David Briggs scoring 152 points for two days for seventh place individual medalist.

Bradley Hamilton, son of Jean Hamilton, Route 1, and Heidi Beane, daughter of Dan and Sarah Beane, sang the song “I Can Do Anything Better Than You” for the Rural Amateur Variety Entertainment competition.

Seven local students were selected to the South Central Iowa Bandmasters Honor Band: The Blue Band: Therese Kuhlman, Abigail Snyder and Analisa Iole; The White Band: Abigail Stone, Trace Ohrt, Jacob Schmidt and Ashley Harris; The Red Band: Hannah Stone and Bryce King.

Collison Par 3 golf course was the host of the Special Olympics Iowa sponsored event 14th annual Unified Golf Meet where Cody Freeze and his unified partner Wyatt Slinker walked away sporting gold medals.

The No. 7 ranked MHS volleyball squad wrapped up its second straight CIML championship with the 15-8, 15-9 and 15-4 sweep of Newton as Rebeccaa Albert led the offense hitting all 15 serves with four aces, scoring 11 points off those serves, adding 19 assists and five blocks.

Janet Soorholtz, 18, of Melbourne, secretary of the Iowa FFA Association and a member of the West Marshall FFA chapter was the Iowa delegate to the National FFA Convention and was placed on the National Awards Program Committee.
