The Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Football Teams First Team included area players on offense: Jarred Carlson and Chanse Creekmur, Marshalltown High School; Drake Ferch, West Marshall; Dylan Youel, North Tama. Defense: Jon Vance and Aaron Gonzalez, MHS; Levi Ross, Grundy Center; Matt Popelka, Grant Vesely and James Weida, North Tama.

The Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Football Selections placed MHS end Ben Buchan on first team defense and MHS linebacker Craig Swanson named to second team defense.

The South Tama Trojans trounced Urbandale 71-63 as Sandy Hagge and Dina Keahna led the Trojans with 24 points each.

MHS boys’ swim team left Des Moines Hoover in their wake as they won 106-57 with Brian Bacon winning the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle while Mike Gettemy was the winner of the 500 freestyle and the 200 free.

Floyd Harthun was presented with a $1,000 honorarium which was donated to Marshalltown Community College for scholarships for Jim Bielfelt and John Pace.

The Jules Gerwin family consisting of John and Beth Gerwin and sons Brett and Scott, Ken Gerwin and wife Gail with daughters Karen and Kathryn Beth, patriarch Jules and wife Roberta not only celebrated Thanksgiving, but struck up the family band as well.

The MCC women basketball team went to 6-1 for the season and climbed to No. 9 on the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II rankings.

MHS forensic team racked up the awards as Amrut Ambardekar was Iowa Forensic League tournament champion; Jason Mathison was Varsity tournament champ in the Lincoln-Douglas debate at the Muscatine Invitational and Robin Mitchell won top Congress award for competitive congress and was named presiding officer.

Julia Shearer appeared in two performances of Handel’s Messiah during Thanksgiving week activities at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.

No. 9 nationally ranked MCC women held off the final attack of No. 7 ranked Kishwaukee to take the first round in the Comfort Inn Classic to win 77-76 as Kwinnyata Mercer blocked the last lay-up and scored 26 points to the win.

Anson and Miller Middle School youths honored by the Morning Optimist Club during “Youth Appreciation Week” were: Leslie Johnson, Melissa Guthrie, Jared Gulbranson and Andrew Howard.

MHS girls’ basketball squad defeated Waverly-Shell Rock 70-40 in the Marshalltown Classic as Melissa Morford and Rianne Pfaltzgraff helped the ‘Cats roll to the win with 19 points and 11 rebounds and 71 points, respectively.

MHS girls downed Central Waterloo 69-51 as Patti Fisher scored 20 points and Connie Seffinga dropped in 22 points toward the cause.

The MCC Tiger women stunned another unbeaten team in the Comfort Inn Classic when they beat Highland Community College 84-79 as Mercer poured in a season-high 28 points.

The MHS sophomore girls won a tight game over Ankeny 39038 as Jill Crosser hit a shot inside with 58 seconds left to take the lead and then the defense held on for the win.

The MCC Tiger cheerleaders were mascot, Megan Winters; main cheerleaders: Lori Marsh, Julie Gull, Shawn Bloom and Renate Slocum.

Rachel Ellefson, alto, and David Laughlin, trombone, prepared for the 2009 Christmas at Wartburg Concert themed “Tidings of Great Joy.”

The MCC Tigers women’s basketball team romped over Simpson JV squad 97-77 as Shelley Delger led the tigers with 29 points and six rebounds and Shelley Bricker dropped in 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The MHS boys’s swim team whipped West Waterloo 93-79 as Doug Knoll won two events: the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke as Rick Ritland won the 100 yard butterfly and teamed with Don Lillibridge, Lee Egleston and Kevin Pugh to wwonthe 200 medley relay.
