Grundy Center’s Trevor Hook racked up a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds in the 76-55 win over Hudson.

The Bobcat boys’ basketball team opened the season with a 75-55 romp over Waverly-Shell Rock as three ‘Cats scored in double figures: Kenny Diggins led with 17 points, Jerry Dobbins added 16 points and Mike Burggraaf finished with 11 points.

The MHS debate team won first place at the Bull Creek Speech & Debate Tournament as the novice debate division quartet of Allen Stevens and Doug Grier for the affirmative and David Daugherty and Greg Beem for the negative had a combined seven wins and one loss.

The MHS boys’ bowling team defeated Southeast Polk 2,810-2,775 as Shane Arment rolled a 233 and finished with a 429 set followed by Cody Taylor’s pair of games in the 200s and a 409 set.

The GMG Wolverines defeated Gladbrook-Reinbeck in the finals 66-44 to win the Quad Tournament as Jeff Fouch led the offense with a game-high 25 points followed by J.C. Welton’s 16 points.

MHS junior distance runner Charlie Kelly earned all-American honors while competing in the National AAU Cross Country Meet in the young men’s division coming in fourth out of 200 runners.

The Garwin girls and boys’ basketball teams scored a pair of wins against Green Mountain as the girls won 76-72 in overtime with Donna Rohach leading the offense with 30 points. The boys had an easier victory, 60-49, as David Bacon led with 17 points followed by Scott Drury with 14 points and six rebounds.

East Marshall basketball player Abby Nuese’s steal and lay up provided the final lead change in the 44-38 win over North Tama as Nuese was the lead scorer with 11 points.

Marshalltown Community College girls flew by Iowa Central Community College 102-55 as Shelley Delger had a game high 25 points followed by Danielle Bagbey’s 17 points, Stephanie Yauk’s 15 points and Kim Baker and Molly Martenson’s 12 points each.

The MCC mens’ basketball squad easily rolled past Iowa Central 98-81 as Ryan Johnston poured in 22 points to lead the Tigers followed by DeAndre Harris and Chad Hook with 14 points each and Floyd Hull adding 12 points.

The intense wrestling of MHS heavyweight Clint Walters saved the meet for Marshalltown by pinning Ankeny’s Al Rewalt to give the ‘Cats a 28-21 victory.
