The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball squad broke the century mark for the second time that season in the 111-83 shootout over William Penn junior varsity as Will Clyburn charted a new career high with 33 points.

The MCC Tigers swept past Iowa Central as the girls won 102-55 with Shelley Delger leading the scoring with 25 points. The boys won 98-81 with Ryan Johnston leading the offense with 22 points.

Nick Norris award winner Tom Taylor was honored as the most valuable player for the 1979 Marshalltown High School football team.

The MHS students preparing for the Holiday Concert included: Emily Bradbury, orchestra; Tara Bogner, concert band; Colleen Duffy, concert choir; Beth Hansen, symphonic band and Jillian Lura, treble choir.

The MHS girls’ basketball squad won its fifth consecutive game 55-43 over Newton as Patty Fisher led the scoring with 23 points followed by Shari Wolfs’ 17 points and Connie Seffinga’s 15.

The MCC women’s basketball team moved up one spot for the week to No. 6 in the NJCAA Division II national rankings with Kwinnyata Mercer named the national player of the week.

After a disappointing 1-3 start for the season, the MHS girls defeated No. 8 ranked Mason City 73-69 as Beth Nixon went 9-for-9 from long range to lead the Bobcats with 27 points.

• 40 years ago in 1979

The West Marshall wrestling squad captured firsts in four weight classes to take the championship at the Lincoln Invitational with 166.5 points. The four winners were Jeff Arnold, 98 pounds; Kevin Jacob, 119; Jim Clark, 126 and Jeff Goodman at 167 pounds.

The MCC women earned their first win at DMACC winning 65-60 as Shannon Lee and Kwinnyata Mercer each had a double/double scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds and 15 points and 10 rebounds, respectively.

The GMG boys basketball remained undefeated at 4-0 as they were victorious 75-58 over Dike-New Hartford with four players in double figures: Jeff Fouch, 20 points; J.C. Welton, 16; Tim Mull, 14 and Jason Benson with 12 points.

The Marshalltown Y Swim Team posted two wins — Ames, 328-304 and Des Moines West Suburban 386-234 — with triple winners: Jenny Christensen, 8-under; Ann Ryden, Mike Clark, Gretchen Rich, 13-14; Patty Link, Nancy Vellinga and Kathy Ryden, open.

MHS basketball player senior Chanse Creekmur set a new scoring record with 42 points in the 89-81 victory over Fort Dodge.

The MHS freshman-sophomore wrestling squad swept five dual meets at the Southeast Polk Invitational to take the championship as Jeremy Hendrick was perfect for the day winning all five of his matches.

Deb Kasischke poured in 55 points to power the New Providence basketball squad past Green Mountain 86-81 as Karen Perry added 21 points of her own.

GMG ran their season record to 3-1 with the 67-44 win over South Hardin as Dustin Woebbeking poured in a game high 23 points, Blaze Wurr finished with 14 points and four rebounds and Seth Appelgate added 10 points and four rebounds.

Thirty-six Miller Middle School students participated in the Marshalltown Miller Middle School Spelling Bee with four finalists: Anne Renze, first place; Mark Berger, second; Jonathan Staron, third place and Lisa Heiden, fourth.

Kelly Sudenga poured in 67 points to lead the ninth grade A team of Miller to an 88-61 victory over Tama.

The Music Makers were prepared to bring a free music concert to Fisher Community Center. The groups consisted of: Amber King, Jillian Meyer, Liz Bormann, Alysia King, Nathan Thurston, Kylee Vopova, Nicole Peters, Ambur Chadderdon, Kristen Barth, Kelly Swanson, Jeremy Hendricks, Brandy Long, Stephanie Hugen, Libby Brown, Jody Wrede, Amanda Lamoureaux, Courtney Fulton, Andrea Etter, Sarah Sharp, Jessie Weaver, Jennifer McKibben Samantha Gervich and Floyd Cutler Sr.

Marty Stephens, Jennie Stephens and Scott Johnson prepared the handmade puppets for the performance of “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” a children’s Christmas musical told from the animal’s points of view in the stable.
