It took the East Marshall Mustang girls just two quarters to get into rhythm as they outscored Grundy Center in the second half by 25 points to win 59-39 as Miranda Barela, Abby Nuese and Alyssa Whitmore combined for 45 of those points.

The performance of Marshalltown’s novice debate teams was the highlight of the Tiger Invitational at Valley High School. Out of four teams, not one had a losing record. David Dougherty and Greg Beem for the affirmative and Doug Grier and Allen Stevens for the negative finished fifth out of 18 teams.

The MHS boys bowling team defeated Waukee 3,094-2,628 as Shane Arment’s second game was a 267 for a total of 461 points along with Cody Taylor’s 433, Chris Steddom’s 419 and DJ Koger’s 409.

The grand prize winner of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. poster and essay/poem contest was third grade student from Anson, Ben Watson with Tyler Mauseth, first for fourth grade from St. Mary and Kyle Hilsabeck, first for fifth grade from Hoglan.

Clutch free throw shooting in the final minute of the game sent LDF boys to a 57-55 win over unbeaten Collins as Dave Devig and Jeff Smaha sank important baskets and Darrin Nuese led the offense with 18 points.

The MHS wrestlers rolled to a 5-0 match win in the Marshalltown Duals defeating Indianola, Charles City, Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Council Bluffs Lewis Central with five wrestlers having a perfect day: Clint Johnson, 119 pounds; Daniel Manchon, 125 pounds; Chris Lukan, 135 pounds; Zach Ray, 152 pounds and Aaron Tecklenburg at 189.

Garwin boys basketball squad played some intense ball as they defeated LDF 77-63 with four Roughriders in double figures: David Bacon led with 24 points; Jay Freese added 17; John Peterson dropped in 13 and Mike Kunch finished with 11 points.

The BCLUW girls knocked off Class 1A No. 1 ranked North Butler handing them their first loss of the season in the 54-41 win as Jamie Fisher dropped in a career high 24 points with nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.

The Marshalltown Community College women won its 10th game in a row with a 99-81 victory over Mount Mercy junior varsity with Shelley Delger leading the Tigers with 26 points.

Comet wrestlers remained undefeated as they crushed Dysart-Geneseo 47-12 as Greg Morris, 98 pounds, remained undefeated at 9-0 with a pin to start off the event.

Marshalltown Lego team Transport took first place in project presentation at the FIRST Lego League state championships at Iowa State University and teammate Ellyn Boland was the recipient of the Grace Hopper award for leadership, perseverance and professionalism.

It was sweet revenge for the West Marshall girls as defeated Roland-Story, which gave the Trojans the only loss of the season, 63-48 as Trisha Huntrods led the scoring for the Trojans with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

MHS divers Chuck Murray with 224.80 points and Doug Heinrichs with 221.25 finished first and second in the losing effort to the Newton Cardinals.
