Conrad auxiliary preps for Veteran’s Day

CONRAD — Conrad American Legion Auxiliary Unit #681 met at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 at the Conrad Legion Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Sue Kitzman with 13 members and officers present. Following opening exercises a door prize drawing was held and won by Bev Rabbitt.

Kitzman then introduced new member LaRue Reed. Each member present introduced themselves and told a bit about their affiliation with ALA. Reed was presented her ALA pin by Mary Ann Miller.

Secretary Sarah Kitzman called roll which was answered by five officers, followed by the minutes of the September meeting, the penny march report and correspondence. Treasurer Susan Sams gave the financial report, noting several budgeted items have been paid. One bill was submitted for payment.

On Nov. 9, Dr. Monte Shelby returns to the Middle School to meet with local veterans to gather information on their service. On Nov. 11, he will be conducting the Veterans Day Program at 2 p.m. in Union which will include a song he has written incorporating all the information, notes and comments he has gathered from students, staff and veterans.

The BCLUW High School Veterans Day program is 10:45 a.m. and includes some readings, the white table demonstration and elementary students parading around the gym with flags. All are invited and encouraged to attend.

The annual Veteran’s Day lunch will be chili, potato chowder or ham & bean soup with a sandwich and pie.

Committee reports:

• Membership — 121 paid memberships, toward a goal of 145.

• Iowa Veterans Home — BINGO is Nov. 13 and thanks to Klein for helping in October.

• Other — Klein presented a report on the recent “Boo at the Barn” at Miracles in Motion, Swisher.

New business: Veronica Daniel presented some dues background on the Cub and Boy Scout Program. Dues have nearly doubled causing a hardship for several Scouts. She asked the auxiliary for monetary support. It was voted to give a donation to the Scout program.

Following the penny march, lunch was served in the Halloween theme by hostess Sarah Kitzman.
