Courthouse renovations program at Kiwanis P.M.

The regular meeting of the Kiwanis P.M. met at Legends Oct. 30. President elect Gary Mason called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Mason welcomed guest Gary Harrington and introduced the guest speaker Lucas Baedke, building and grounds supervisor for Marshall County.

Baedke gave the club an overview of the rebuild of our Courthouse following the July 19, 2018 tornado. In many ways the damage caused by the tornado may have been a blessing in disguise revealing areas in that were hidden from the naked eye.

Beams and structure that had deteriorated from age are now replaced and the total structure is now rebuilt and made sound for another 100 years. There are bathrooms added, the general floor plan reorganized for better use of space and made more accessible for the general public. With open interior walls damaged from the sprinkler system when the chimneys and the cupola collapsed breaking water lines there is better wiring and fiber optics for the entire building.

The clock tower is making progress at the ground level to be raise to the top in the next 3-4 weeks. The interior, not delayed by weather, will no doubt be completed before the exterior. Baedke said with 60 percent of the building damaged it has been amazing to see the rebuild coming together.

The meeting continued with Ted Kallestad providing a sign-up sheet for Salvation Army bell ringing on Nov. 21 and a reminder that next weeks speaker will be Bill Clark on Project 52.
